About This Item
128 printed pages. 8vo. Title page with printers device border. Lacks pages 49-50, 63-66, and 79-80. Printed in Finnish. A miniature prayer book of some rarity. The university press of Turku was the most important centre of printing in Finland until the destruction of the university during the Great Fire of Turku (1827), which saw the institution relocate to the modern capital of Finland, Helsinki, with the 483 surviving volumes. Hand-made rag paper (title-page with ink offset from contemporary owner's stamp, and grubby; thumbed and with a number of smaller stains; some top corners slightly creased). Some leaves untrimmed. Contemporary owner's purple ink stamp on front paste-down endpaper, J.G.Johansson (no further information). 47 x 60mm. Contemporary parchment covered boards, rebacked with plain brown calf spine with two raised bands. Thin sandy boards profoundly and richly patinated with deep chocolate swirls from repeated handling. No copy found anywhere in commerce, nor in any reference book on miniature books nor in any library in the world. Only known copy of possibly the earliest miniature book printed in Finland. The earliest book printed in Turku was published in 1658 and the National Library of Finland only lists 38 full-size publications in this city ever having been printed in or before 1825. No OCLC number. Not found in National Library of Finland. Not in WorldCat. WorldCat locates 0 copies worldwide.
