About This Item

New York: McGraw Hill, 1933. first edition. hardcover. very good: age wear/dust dulled boards, faded gilt lettering on spine, slight lean, spots of foxing/toning to endpapers, text clean, binding intact./no DJ. 12mo. 278pp. stated first edition. from Introduction: "Ethnology is the study of aboriginal cultures. No adequate description of any culture is possible that does not include as much of its history as is accurately and legitimately possible. Our primary duty is to the specific tribe we are describing. Upon this, certainly all ethnologists are agreed. The vast majority, however, insist that ethnology has another function. They contend that its results should be made subsidiary to much larger problems--to the determination of historical processes and cultural dynamics as such; that they are to furnish us with the raw material for the formulation of general laws. It is the present writer's contention that little warrant exists for thus extending its meaning and that, on the whole, confusion and mischief have followed in its wake." #01282.
