New York: Baker and Scribner, 1849-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. Baker and Scribner, 1849; no additional printings indicated; pencil inscription on front end page of Julia F. Hamilton, wife of Alexander Hamilton's grandson, Charles A. Hamilton; re-bound in three quarter brown leather with marbled paper over front and rear board, with binder's label on front paste-down (S.T. Hosmer & Co. of Toledo, OH); pp.[i-v], vi-xvi, 453 (complete). Rear board and flyleaf is attached by a couple threads, binding is sound, if precarious between a couple signatures; text is clean but pages are heavily foxed throughout; leather heavily rubbed, corners and edges worn, marbled paper lightly rubbed but otherwise colors remain rather bright; previous owner's red-tinted plastic wrapper over boards, taped to rear paste-down.
