Brown cloth, rebacked, rubbed and soiled at the surface and edges, gilt lettering and designs on the spines and front boards. Square and firmly bound, hinges reinforced, former owners' signatures and dates on the second front endpapers of each volume, foxing throughout. The American explorers classic account of his travels and time as Ambassador to Central American that resulted in the rediscovery of the Maya civilization. The Metropolitan Museum of Art hails Catherwood's engravings as "a landmark of architectural illustration.
