About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Funk & Wagnells Company, 1956. First Edition, 2nd Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/Good-. The trued story of an American's single-handed attempt to introduce a new way of life into a remote Central Asian kingdom'' known as Hunza. The events transpired while the author, a reconnaissance engineer on the staff of General Joseph Stillwell during WWII, served as doctor in a deserted castle & ran a "handcraft" school for local children, all while fighting the distrust of the local people & the constant threat of invasion by Russia. In 271 pages + 16 pages of black-and-white photos in center. A FIRST EDITION, Second printing, from 1956, this hardcover 8vo (6.25" x 9.25) is in VG condition: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages lightly tanned but completely unmarked save for rather heavy foxing to endpapers & outside page edges, very mild foxing inside. Modest rubbing & a few small, light spots to extremities, mild sunning to head of spine. MUSTY smell. The price-clipped DJ is just Good- (minus): all there & colorful, but with soiling & chipping all around; protected in mylar by former owner, which has some opacity. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
