About This Item

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1919. First. Very Good. Christopher Morley was an American journalist, novelist, essayist and poet He was very popular in the first half of the 20th century and is best known for two novels, Parnassus on Wheels and The Haunted Bookshop
The Haunted Bookshop is not a novel of the supernatural Rather, the name refers to the ghosts of the past that haunt all libraries and bookstores: "the ghosts of all great literature" Throughout the novel Morley, through the character of Roger Mifflin, makes reference to the knowledge and wisdom that one can gain from literature This is a suspenseful novel set in Brooklyn around the time of the end of World War I It continues the story of Roger Mifflin, the book seller in Parnassus on Wheels It also details an adventure of Miss Titania Chapman and a young advertising man named Aubrey Gilbert

Bound in brown cloth with stamped black lettering to spine and front cover, this is a first edition, later state (4) of this work It contains a tipped-in typed letter to Margaret K Foley, dated February 3, 1933, with letterhead of The Saturday Review of Literature, signed by Morley An advertisement for a proposed "The Haunted Book Shop" (the subject of the letter) is laid in, as is a poem by Morley entitled "Of an Ancient Spaniel in Her Fifteenth Year"
The book has mild external wear The hinges are cracked, and text block is slightly cracked, however the binding remains sound Text is clear and crisp through mild age toning/foxing Margaret Keller Forey's bookplate appears on the front pastedown vii, 289 pp.
