About This Item

New York: The Dial Press, 1979. Hardcover. 264p., hardbound in 8.5x6 inch pale grey boards with dark red backstrip lettered silverfoil, and enclosed in the dust jacket (unclipped). Mild hints of handling and age, a very good copy that is inscribed and signed by Greenleaf on the title page, to a bookdealer friend. Laid in are two typewritten letters to same, dated 10 Oct 1981 and 18 Oct 1984, with the respective typed envelopes and a New Yorker magazine review, laudatory, from 1979. Greenleaf does the best imitation Raymond Chandler we have read (Ross Macdonald trod a parallel path). Greenleaf's opening take is near-plagiary, yet we are not complaining.
