London: Thomas Maiden, 1806. Fifth Edition. Full leather. Very good. The Fifth Edition of An Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope by Joseph Warton, published in London in 1806.. Octavo, [two volumes], viii, 396pp; 416pp, [8]. Full calf, title in gilt on morocco label affixed to spine. Gilt embellishments to covers and spine. Stated "The Fifth Edition, Corrected" on title page. Leather cracked along spine, scuff marks to covers. Light soiling to endpapers, otherwise solid text blocks. Includes appendix and index in Volume II. The first edition of An Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope was published in 1756 by Dodsley of London, but the second volume did not appear until 1782, with the title page noting its absence for over 20 years. (David Fairer, 1977).
