About This Item

London: Longman, Green, and Co.,, 1902. In a lovely example of the scarce jacket First edition in book form, first impression, retaining the scarce dust jacket, of this comedic work by the Scottish author of the Fairy Book series. The Disentanglers "is the most successful of Lang's attempts at humorous fiction" (Green, p. 198). It is "a sparkling social comedy containing moments of inspired tomfoolery, such as the kidnap of a Canadian heiress from a castle on the west coast of Scotland, and an ensuing mad chase around the Minch in submarines" (ODNB). It was anonymously serialized in Longman's Magazine from January to December of the same year. Octavo. Original cream cloth, spine lettered in black, spine and front cover illustrated in black and red, black endpapers. With dust jacket. Frontispiece, with tissue guard (almost detached), and 6 plates. Spine mildly toned, foxing to edges, margins of outer leaves toned, contents fresh. A near-fine copy in like dust jacket, spine toned, nicks and shallow chips to fold ends, trivial vertical crease to rear panel, a beautifully preserved example. Roger Lancelyn Green, Andrew Lang, 1946.
