About This Item

London: Frederick Warne, No date [c.1900]. [Diaries] FINE LEATHER BINDING, reprint. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[2] xii; 639 [1]. Red full calf, boards gilt-ruled. Brown label lettered in gilt, gilt-tooling, and raised bands to spine. Dentelles in blind to turn-ins. Marbled endpapers and matching marbled edges. Some toning to first 50 or so pages, light spotting to preliminaries and rear leaves. Ownership inscription in purple pencil to front blank. Small binder's label to flyleaf verso. Heavy dulling to marbled edges. Gentle scuffing to boards, sunning to spine. Mild rubbing to extremities. Very good. The detailed private diary that Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669, first published in the 19th century. It has become one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. Although detailing major events throughout the period such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London, his diary still includes the trivialities of everyday life one would expect to find in a diary such as the jealousies and insecurities he experiences. All the fold out pages of the diary remain in excellent condition.
