"Theirs not to reason why" was the song of the Laureate, immortalizing the charge of the gallant Six Hundred, a brigade of cavalry heading to destruction in the Balaclava Battle of 1854. It has been considered one of the greatest military follies in all military history. The author proceeds to demolish this consensus version of the War's history and notes that it succeeded in its major British aim of halting Russian expansion near the Black Sea. He postulates that the image of the campaign as badly managed by the Allies is an unwarranted generalization and explains why this is so. 216 pages, indexed. Bibliography. 1973, Taplimger Publishing Company, New York
