FROM THE PREFACE: "Natural History is, of all human pursuits, that which has most attraction; mind of man; no other excites such proof God; who has created all things, and regulates all things, by one eternal law. The science is however in its infancy in this country. Hence the many crude systems which has been published, in France especially, that country, which, it is to be confessed, is yet a whole century before this In the most delightful part of the science, animated nature. To this moment, the British nation has not produced a systematic arrangement of living nature ; nor do we pretend in the work here offered, to supply that deficiency completely. The French nation has within the last year produced three editions of Buffon and his successors, each more voluminous than any work on any subject in our language; and shall then the mere English reader, the youth of both sexes, the admirers of the arts of graving printings and fine colouring, still lament the want of a handsome and complete work on Natural History? That task be ours: those arts; In which it is not vanity to say we excel, will be called to our aid; and if the British Museum be not patronised as a national work by the British nation, it will neither be the fault of the editors printer, or publisher; nor of the artists employed in the various departments of the undertaking."

WILLIAM HOLLOWAY (1761-1864). English author.

Description:
London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. According to the directions to the binder at the end of Vol 6, there should be 60 plates - this copy is lacking a frontispiece of a turkey and… Read More

1785 Buffon Natural History SCIENCE Color Illustrated Evolution Microbiology 5v

"Virtually all the well-known writers of the Enlightenment were 'Buffonians'"
― Ernst Mayer

The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, "Histoire Naturelle," was fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all-natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, he focused on the individual orders of living things. The DSB mentions that
"Buffon's order is formed by a philosophical bias rather than by science."
This beautiful five-volume German example features 17 impressive hand-colored engravings depicting the development of humankind and the human form!

Description:
1764 ATLAS MAPS & Voyages Pluche Geography Asia Arabia Greece America Egypt
Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history 'Spectacle of Nature'. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit.
Pluche, however, was not known for just 'Spectacle'. He wrote several other works including a large geographical concordance. This book, published in 1764, is an alphabetical concordance supplemented with 14 folding plates and maps.

And will the ice ages return, covering the continents with glaciers as they did twenty thousand years ago?
