About This Item

Glasgow: Thomas Murray and Son, 1871 . First edition. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". Not Stated. A smartly bound first edition of this work on birds of the West of Scotland, written by Robert Gray. First edition, rebound in a smart half morocco binding, with marbled boards. Written by Robert Gray, a Scottish banker and famed amateur ornithologist. He became the inspector of the bank's branches and during his frequent inspections he studied the local birds. The note-books and their illustrations by his skilful pencil, formed the basis of his "Birds of the West of Scotland," published in 1871. In 1851 Gray was one of the founders of the Natural History Society of Glasgow. With fifteen delightful illustrated plates. Collated, complete. Bookplate of Frederick William Smith to the front paste down. In half morocco binding, with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing and a touch of bumping, mainly to the head of the spine. Rubbing to the boards causing slight loss to the front. A touch of fading to the spine. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good
