The Antarctic Research Series serves working scientists, students, and nonscientists interested in biological or physical research endeavors in Antarctica and, on occasion, the general public interested in the Antarctic environment. The primary purpose is to provide an effective and authoritative outlet for research conducted in Antarctica. Most Antarctic research results are, and will continue to be, published in the standard disciplinary journals. However, the difficulty and expense of conducting experiments in Antarctica make it prudent to publish the methods, data, and results of such research projects as fully as possible so that the scientific community has the maximum opportunity to evaluate these projects and so that full information is permanently and readily available. Thus the coverage of the subjects is generally more extensive in this series than is possible in the journal literature. The series is designed to complement Antarctic field work, much of which consists of cooperative, interdisciplinary projects. VOLUME I of the Antarctic Research Series, deals with a number of marine studies. There is an abundance of living forms, plant and animal, in the cold waters overlying the continental shelf of Antarctica and in the adjacent ocean depths. There are good reasons for the ongoing and currently intensified interest in marine biological research in the region, even though the difficulties in pursuing it are great. The ecological systems of this large polar continent and its adjacent seas are unique and therefore demand full study; phenomena of adaptation, acclimation, and evolution are crucial. VOLUME II is arranged to bring together papers that complement one another, either by reason of supporting data or through regional association. There is another advantage to this order: the first four contributions are largely concerned with phenomena, whereas the last three emphasize systematics. Contribution number five provides a balance between these general areas of research. Thus, although each study is distinct and independent of the others, the subject materials are interrelated and provide a common fund of information on Antarctic marine environments and their organisms. VOLUME III comprises 12 original papers which, in subject matter, range from an investigation of the life processes of the microalgae of sea-ice (John S. Bunt) and the productivity of the sea (S. Z. El-Sayed) to the physiologic behavior and reactions to diving of the Weddell seal (G. L. Kooyman).
