From the rear panel of the dust jacket: "The unforgettable story of America's worst inferno and Teddy Roosevelt's triumphant struggle to save the American Forest." This quote refers to the great forest fire of August, 1910 which burned thousands of acres of National Forest lands in the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana. It also tells the larger story of Roosevelt and his chief forester, Gifford Pinchot, and their fervent desire to save the beautiful first generation forests of the west from the saws of the big timber companies who conspired to clear cut their way to the Pacific Ocean.
