Hardcover, red cloth, silver title on spine (owner's signature on title page, typed book review inserted which had been taped to the front end paper, spine faded, top edge stained, top & bottom of spine frayed, corners bent & worn, edgeworn, small dent to back cover, waterstains to inside back cover, interior is unmarked). No dust jacket.

This is a "romantic-realist" work of fiction by Canadian author Hugh MacLennan. One of his earliest works, it depicts life in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the First World War and the catastrophic events of the Halifax Explosion. It is considered a pivotal work in the history of Canadian fiction.
Synopsis
A major 20th century Canadian author, Hugh MacLennan was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, in 1907. His seven novels and many essays and travel books present a chronicle of Canada that often mediates between the old world of its European cultural heritage and the new world of American vitality and materialism. Among his many honours, he won five Governor General’s Awards. Hugh MacLennan died in Montreal in 1990.
