About This Item

Buffalo, N.Y: Geo. H. Derby and Co, 1851. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. First edition. Boards soiled, ink name on front paste down endpaper. 1851 Hard Cover. vi, 343 pp. 8vo. Includes fourteen plates and eighty wood engravings. From the preface: "... originally published in the Second Volume of the 'Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge,' in a form far too costly to be generally accessible... its officers have liberally assented to their republication in the present form, and permitted the use of the original plates and engravings... In preparing this edition, the author has added largely to the original Memoir, and has also appended a supplement, containing a resume or synoptical view of the Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley. This will enable the general reader to institute all necessary comparisons between the aboriginal remains of New York, and those of the Western States.
