Previous owner, G.R.Parkin has dated the book 1888 and inscribed it with a note describing where in Taunton he purchased the book. [This is the famed educator Dr. George Robert Parkin a biographer of Sir John A. Macdonald and Headmaster of Upper Canada College. He has signed the inscription with initials and the fep proper as 'G.R. Parkin 1888'.] The feps are yellowed but otherwise interiors pages are clean and white. Some old tape repairs to the fep and cracked hinges. General light soiling to the covers. Bumping and some chipping to the head and tail of the spine cap. Small 8vo. The owner of the album is unknown as is the identity of this American family. A label on the back cover shows that the album was made in Chicago, Illinois. The photographs depict the life of this family. The first several pages show the classic group family pictures, baby photographs and couples with children. However, not far in come the first pictures of military life. One picture shows an airship/dirigible passing overhead. Others show various scenes of camp life. Many have notations on the reverse. Early on is a photograph of tent encampment at Harfleur, outside of Le Havre, France. The next photograph showing a group of sombre men is labelled simply “Prisoners”. On offer is a fascinating, typewritten letter regarding the shipment of industrial chemicals in France, written on February 16, 1945, near the end of the second World War. The document is a letter from the French chemical firm Etablissements Kuhlmann to a manufacturing client in the town of Dole in eastern France. This document concerns the documentation necessary to ship some wartime chemicals.
