Cubbins' breathtaking descriptions of bombing missions over central Europe convey the apprehension, excitement, peril and heroism of the relentless American and British effort to knock out the sources of the oil and gasoline that fueled the fighter planes and tanks of Nazi Germany's war machine."

Attractive book with 3 young children washing a dog in a big pan of water on the front board. No date, but the book was given to a boy at Christmas in 1939, on front endpaper. On the inside of the front cover, there is a wonderful Harry Rountree illustration wherein a dog is standing on his rear legs and saying to a bird nesting on a branch above his head, with the caption "You're nesting in my mistress's bonnet." There are also 8 full-page colour illustrations of other animals and birds. Except for the "browning" of the poor paper, the contents of the book are VG. 21 stories with small b/w illustrations by B. Butler. The full-page colour illustrations seem to all been done by G. D. Rowlandson.
Inside the rear cover is another drawing by Harry Rountree with a dog sitting on top of his dog-house and either barking or howling, perhaps because his food dish is empty.

Pristine copy in the original shrinkwrap. Elephant and a donkey in outline on the front cover and rear cover. The perfect gift for a Gore Vidal fan.

Contents VG. 18 wonderful colour illustrations on White glossy pages. Wonderful endpapers front and back.: a colourful march of characters from the Prince Charming Colour Book Series. Inscription on half-title for Christmas 1963, but perhaps published in 1959.

Endpapers are the map of "The Mediterranean Basin, 1939". Front of d.j. has a b/w close-up photo of General Wavell. From the d.j. : "This masterly study of generalship covers a period of only two years, but they were two years of intense operational activity during which Field Marshal Wavell, as Commander-in-Chief, Middle East, was at one point conducting no less than five campaigns simultaneously. Two of those campaigns will stand in history as truly great victories and one, the campaign in Greece in 1941, as a source of endless controversy."

There is a vocabulary list on the last page. About VG condition, considering that the book is 77 years old and was used by early grades children.

From the back cover: "The Werewolf of Ponkert" first appeared in Weird Tales magazine in 1928, and H. Warner Munn remembers that the idea stemmed from a query of H.P. Lovecraft's which asked why someone did not attempt a werewolf story as narrated by the werewolf himself. The story is placed in fifteenth century Hungary, where its central character is forced to join a werewolf pack through the power of a creature known simply as 'the master'--a creature patterned in the tradition and manner of Melmoth the Wanderer. The book as it is issued contains a second story, "The Werewolf's Daughter" which was originally a three-part serial in 1928 Weird Tales."
The two stories make up a volume that is well-suited to Centaur Books' 'Time-Lost' series.

Introduction by Bryn King, husband of Carol Evans. They live on Saltspring Island, B.C. This softcover copy of "West Coast: Homeland of Mist" is SIGNED by Carol on the first page without an inscription. An exceptionally nice copy.

Preface: "This book constitutes the fifth of our series on British coastal, cross-channel, and pleasure vessels, In it, as elsewhere, the word "steamer" is used to include motor vessels. When our earlier books on the Scottish fleets were produced during 1935-39, there was no concerted plan for the compilation of others; but, with the passage of time, it occurred to us that our net might be spread wider to embrace the whole of the British Isles in the same categories of shipping. In the present publication we have confined our attention to some of the principal companies, not only because the cost of production makes larger books out of the question, but also because the public's interest in the smaller concerns is more limited." There are 32 glossy pages of b/w photos of the various ships.

This is the 1st Edition of "What can you do with a shoe?" to have full-colour illustrations by Maurice Sendak. From the d.j. flap: "What can you do with a shoe? You can put it on your ear or wear it on your head or butter it like bread or use apple jam instead! What can you do with a hat? You can fill it up with pickles or with popcorn or with glue. An octopus could rest in it, a turtle be a guest in it. Or would a horse look best in it? These are samples of the questions and wonderfully silly, laugh-provoking answers in a game played by a little girl and boy dressed up in their parents' clothes."
