Protected by Brodart book jacket cover.This book David Brinkley's reminiscences of Washington at the dawn of America's involvement in World War II is no mere historical curiosity shop. It's very instructive about the way Washington still works. For instance, Brinkley tells us that in September 1941, while FDR was still wavering about where to put the military's new headquarters building, an Army general told the contractor to get started. By the time Roosevelt found out about this a month later, the foundations for the Pentagon had already been put in place.

Signed on page with forward: Feb. 18, 1964 With best wishes, Fred Schwengel(Schwengel was the President of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. This book was nearly completed by the printer when President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The first bound copy was to be presented to him on December 4th. One of the last few pages of the book are a moving tribute to JFK. It states, "Thus he warmly approved of the objectives of the United States Capitol Historical Society. He served as a member of its Honorary Board of Trustees." The Capitol Historical Society was chartered under the laws of the District of Columbia on August 8, 1962. It is my belief that this is the first edition of We, The People ever produced. I have not found any evidence of anything earlier. It has been published every year since.

He was a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 1948, considered for a time to be the front-runner. He thereafter regularly continued to run for that and other offices, such that his name became most identified with his status as a perennial candidate.

She had an important role in setting up an enduring role for her husband with the LBJ Library. She's the first one to campaign extensively on her own for her husband.
Writing in 1986, William H. Inman observed that Lady Bird was considered by some "the most effective First Lady since Eleanor Roosevelt", citing her battles against highway billboard forests, auto heaps, and junk piles as well as her support for American public landscapes maintaining beauty and sanity.
