A limited edition, "personally inscribed and numbered by the author." Labeled on the limitation page as # 149. Speer traveled around the western United States as a mining engineer who worked for The Texas Company. In his preface he says the book's collection of stories from his travels "represents 25,000 miles of travel and six years' work." He writes, "The stories will take you over many Western Trails and you will find their names mentioned as you go along," including the Old Spanish, the Santa Fe and National Old Trails (the last two of which became parts of Route 66). The book is illustrated with photographs Speer took. Based upon the cars, it appears most of them are from the 1920s. Book Third printing (January 1926) of the first book by Dies, a financial writer who served on the Chicago Board of Trade. It provides an explanation of how the Grain Exchange operated. Several books on commodities trading followed, including a fictional account, "The Plunger: or, the Story of the Wheat Pit," with a story that draws from the non-fiction background in this book. In a story that sounds familiar, the AP reported on Sept. 30, 1930, that the Chicago Board of Trade was investigating wheat hedging by Soviet Russia. The last paragraph of the story mentions this book: "To other statements, in which it was suggested the government should go beyond the Russian charges and investigate 'grain gambling,' officials referred their inquisitors to a book called 'The Wheat Pit' by Edward Jerome Dies of the board of trade. Book The Cupples & Leon printings are cheaper than those of Grosset & Dunlap from the same era and suffer from amateurish drawings and plots and characters that are more set in the WWII era than other series. In spite of that, as Axe notes, "The Penny Parker Books are eagerly collected today, especially because they are the work of Mildred A. Wit, and are more valuable as collectors' items than other series books that are better mysteries." In addition, he writes, they "are rather difficult to locate today with dust jackets, or even without dust jackets for that matter . . ." (p. 122).
