Creased from folding with a few nicks to edge and some inky finger-marks, otherwise in Very Good condition. The main text takes the form of a conversation between two working class drinkers, Joe and Bill, giving their clear reasons why pubs should be open for reasonably long hours during the week and on Sundays, and exhorting the reader to sign the petition for MPs asking them to vote against the Bill. The proposal to limit Sunday opening times was one of a long series throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and was strongly opposed by the general public. Although when Bill complains "then we are not to have the right to drink at the pub before 8 o'clock in the morning if we want one ever so badly" he rather sounds like a case in point. Large, ephemeral and unsurprisingly unrecorded.

With 39 copper-engraved plates: Illustrated by Francis Hayman and engraved by Hubert Gravelot. Bound in contemporary full speckled calf with double gilt fillet frames and corner ornaments to boards; gilt foliate rolls to board edges, six raised bands; gilt coronet ornaments and titles to spine compartments; marbled end-papers, red speckled edges. A sound set in a good contemporary binding, albeit with five volumes wanting spine labels and minor loss at spine tips. Joints and hinges cracked but holding, some minor scuffing to boards. With the 1816 Robert (or possibly Thomas) Bewick engraved armourial bookplate of Newcastle Upon Tyne banker Charles William Bigge (1773 - 1849) to each ffep. Collection of fifteen superb mounted and titled early twentieth century silver gelatin prints depicting armament manufacture at the Wellington Cast Steel Foundry in Middlesbrough, owned by William Shaw & Co. The largest five magnum prints are 22 x 28 inches (including mount) and show the manufacture of 'Cast Steel Ariel Bombs for the Great War', four of these images are reproduced as smaller prints of 13 x 17 inches (including mount). Two photographs are approx 21 x 15 1/2 inches and show variously the 'Main Casting of Stern Frame for Admiralty Twin Screw Tank Steamer' and a superb image of 'Southampton Floating Dry Dock, The Largest of its Kind in the World' built by Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Each approximately 42 x 34 cm, dissected into 15 parts, mounted onto linen and folded into pebbled cloth covers (approx 12.5 x 9 cm) in shades of mainly green and brown. Decorative printed paper title labels to upper boards. Principal roads are marked in colour and county boundaries are hand coloured in outline. Useful information tables to inner front covers showing town populations, market days etc and distance tables. Covers only very lightly rubbed to edge; initials of former owner inscribed to linen verso of each. A little minor toning and foxing otherwise a remarkably clean set. Near Fine. Each map is scarce, so it is unusual to find a run of Walker's County Maps obviously having been together since they were printed, especially in such uniformly fine condition.

Mark to front pastedown from where postcard has become detached; very minor marks to endpapers and a little light foxing to textblock edge otherwise contents clean. A verey good copy overall. Critical biography of the American poet by the English writer and critic (1895-1965). The enclosed postcard is from Fausset to psychic medium Dora Head who "connected" with Whitman at seances and also photographed Whitman psychometrically, and the content refers to the recent publication of the book and descibed Head as "a friend of Walt".
