Description:
London,: John Wallis, 16 Ludgate Street,, 1794.. 695 by 490mm. (27.25 by 19.25 inches).. Engraved map with original hand colour, dissected and mounted on linen. This geographical game map from 1794 recreates the contemporary tradition of the 'Grand Tour', where wealthy young men were sent around Europe to acquire culture and experience of different countries. It is suitable for two to three players but up to six can play "if a double set of counters and pyramids are purchased". Each player takes a pyramid and four counters, which are meant to represent the tourist and their servants. They start at Harwich (No. 1), then spins a totem to see how many cities they can advance. Each subsequent roll is added to the total, so the last city (London) must be landed on with an exact roll to win the game. If for various reasons they miss a turn, they leave a counter (or servant) at the city, and have to retrieve them before they can advance. The game rules and a numbered list of places are in the margins,… Read More

Engraved plan, fine original hand-colour, alphabetical list of streets below, old folds reinforced, some with minor loss. Wallis's Guide for Strangers was a popular map, printed in numerous editions between 1813 and 1843. This edition shows the London and Greenwich Railway, opened between 1836 and 1838, which terminated at London Bridge, and was the first steam railway to have a terminus in the capital. Also shown is the London and Blackwall line, opened on July 6, 1840. This terminates at Minories on the current map, but was extended to Fenchurch Street in 1841. The London and Birmingham Railway was the first intercity line to be built into London. It terminates at Euston Station, which on this map is named as the Birmingham Railway Depot, and ran from 1833 to 1846, when it became part of the London and North Western Railway Line. Lastly is the Eastern Counties Railway, opened June 20, 1839. In… Read More

Description:
London,: 3 New Bond Street,, [c.1850].. (height) 930mm (36.5 inches).. Signed to dial Dixey & Sons, London, with engraved brass dial divided for furlongs, miles, poles and yards, six-spoke wheel with steel rim tread, square brass fork body with hinged side for wheel removal, straight handle, on modern mahogany stand. The origins of mechanically measuring and recording distance can be traced speculatively to 336-323 BC when Alexander the Great employed bematists for his campaign into Asia. As Donald W. Engels theorises, the accuracy of the measurements implies that the bematists used a sophisticated mechanical device for measuring distances, undoubtedly an odometer such as the one described by Heron of Alexandria. The reintroduction of this process in the seventeenth century, with the development of the waywiser, accounted for an influx of cartographic accuracy, and paved the way for the large-scale surveys of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Each revolution of the wheel measured a set… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam,: by Jacobus Robyn, inde Nieuwe Brugh steeg inde Stuurman,, [c1630-1674].. 810 by 978mm. (32 by 38.5 inches).. A separately published large engraved chart printed in four sheets, joined, with fine contemporary hand-colour lavishly heightened in gold. The very rare second state (of four) of one of the most important charts published in the seventeenth century, one of the earliest on Mercator's projection, and the first on the projection for North America. Waters: the "earliest printed chart of the Atlantic … became immediately the standard chart for navigation to America and the Cape of Good Hope". Campbell says that only "a few examples at most" of each state have survived. The title indicates that the Paskaert was designed to show the area chartered to the West India Company in 1621. Destombes and Gernez suggest that the lack of a privilege on the first state indicates that it was used exclusively by the company and not available to the general public. Engraved chart, printed on vellum, traces of original hand-colour. An unrecorded state of one of the most important charts published in the seventeenth century; and one of the earliest on Mercator's projection to show North America. So influential was Blaeu's chart during the seventeenth century, that several derivatives are known, those recorded are by: J. A. Colom, circa 1639 and circa 1665; T. Jacobsz, circa 1646 and circa 1650; S. de Ruesta, 1654; H. Doncker, the present chart, 1659; Hugo Allard, circa… Read More

Johannes van Loon (1611-1686) "was an accomplished mathematician and astronomer.  His earliest cartographic works were with Theunisz Jacobs in the 1640s.  From 1650 he worked with Joannes Janssonius, engraving amongst other works the plates for his celestial atlas by Cellarius, 1660. In 1661, he published his first work with this brother, Gilles; the 'Zee Atlas' containing thirty-five maps. In 1666 the plates were sold to Jan Jansson van Waesberge, with whom he then co-published the atlas. This edition was expanded to forty-seven maps, and by 1676 there were fifty" (Burden).

Buhot worked in both France and England, and was particularly interested in city views and conveying the effects of different types of weather, using a variety of printmaking techniques. The print has his trademark 'symphonic margins', inspired by the marginal decorations of medieval manuscripts, that draw out and enlarge upon elements of the same print. After seven years with the East India Company in the subcontinent, and a few false starts on his return (as hosier, dyer, and glass painter), William Herbert (1718-1795) finally settled on being a seller and publisher of prints, maps, and charts in one of the new houses on London Bridge in 1749. He launched his business with the publication of some drawings that he had acquired during his time abroad. As London Bridge was notorious for burning (and falling) down, Herbert had the bright idea of a floating fire-engine, which suggestion was taken up by the Royal Exchange Assurance company. Nonetheless, the bridge burnt in 1758, and Herbert was forced to move to Leadenall Street, where he published the opportunistic, 'A chronological and historical account from the… Read More
