I classify DJ as Near Fine only because it has a single 1/2 inch circular stain on the front and a smudge near the bottom right corner of the back. Not ex lib, not clipped, no remainder marks. No pagination but approximately 27-30 pages.

Cazenovia, NY: Henry & Sweetlands, 1845. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Fair condition leather bound first edition, 1845. No DJ. Binding is still tight and all pages are firm. Front cover is not fully shaken but is in the process of separating from the spine (from the bottom). The original leather and lettering have flaked off the right half of the spine and what remains is in poor condition. It appears that some brown tap was applied to secure the spine in the distant past, and two strips of it remain on the front and back covers. Shelf wear to top and bottom of spine, corners of covers are rounded and worn. Pages show mild tanning commensurate with age, but quite good overall. 1/8 inch creases to bottom corners of pages 50-90. 252 pages.

This is the quarto version (alphabetical letters appear at the bottom of every 4th page as a guide to the bookbinder), 11.75" x 7.75", of Alexander Pope's iconic masterpiece of marketing and poetic achievement. You may see this volume bundled (even in upscale auction houses such as Bauman's) as volume one of four volumes, but that is an anachronism! Pope gambled on an audacious move in 1717 by publishing his "Collected Works" at the raw young age of 29. He was already a significant force in the English literary world, but, just as today, only venerated masters at the ends of their careers published "Collected Works." Dust jacket condition, very good: ½''x1/2" tear at top of front and a series of 6 small 1/8" tears at top of back, likely to be described as "wear" in other descriptions. 387 pages.

No markings, creases of tears (except as noted above to DJ), or tears. I would list if as New except for a few light smudges to the outside of the last twenty pages (when viewed with pages shut).
