Description:
Paris:: Bessa,, 1836.. First edition. Fine with original hand-coloring. A fine original hand-colored stipple engraving on watermarked laid paper (Sheet: 20.32 x 27.94 cm). Engraving by Barrois after painting by Bessa. Pancrace Bessa (1772-1832) was at one time student of Van Spaendonck, the esteemed flower painter of Le Jardin du Roi, and who along with colleague Pierre Joseph Redoute (court painter to Empress Josephine and Napoleon) mastered the fine art of stipple engraving produced some of the finest botanical work of early nineteenth century France. Bessa's technical and artistic achievement evident, his finely hand-colored engravings remain coveted examples of botanical illustration. Flore des Jardiniers ( Flora of Gardeners) was Bessa's final and finest botanical work. (Great Flower Books 159, Dunthorne 33).

Great Britain:: Original Watercolor,, [c.1880-1900].. Fine. Fine original watercolor on rag paper. (25.4 x 17.7 cm). Matted in Rag. Framed in one inch gilt basket weave moulding. Condition: Fine, with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution, this vivid watercolor scene (Hippopotamus river scene) was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist, field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur, or armchair, traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle, this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting, as was the custom, and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of… Read More

Philadelphia:: D. Rice and A.N. Hart,, 1849.. First edition. Fine. Fine condition. Original lithograph; printed and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia. Octavo (6.75 x 10 .5 inches). Matted in Rag Board. As the oil on canvas portrait of Wat-Che-Mon-Ne: An Ioway Chief known as The Orator, was destroyed by fire in 1865, the original hand-colored lithographs by JT Bowen are the only surviving rendering of this essential chapter of Americana. During the first quarter of the nineteenth century as the Native American people traveled to Washington DC to discuss their plight; the loss of their lands and destruction of their people, they appealed to Thomas McKenney, the then Chief to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in whom they found a sincere advocate in the efforts to improve the welfare of the Native American people. After meeting to discuss the situation, McKenney invited every one of his guests to sit for formal portraits, and included all members; not only the Chiefs, but also the… Read More

Description:
London, Paris & New York:: Cassell, Petter & Galpin,, 1873.. First edition. Fine. A Fine original Chromolithograph. Drawn by J. W. Ludlow and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day, & Son, Lithographers. During the Mid-Victorian period, the nature of a country gentleman's wealth was determined by the breadth of his flock, which at times referred to his prized poultry stock. This fine original chromolithograph is an actual portrait of a prizewinning cultivated breed. In the tradition of classic 19th century animal portraiture, the bird is here represented in minute detail accentuating the meritous elements of the particular breed. The plate not only names the bird, but credits its owner and documents at which prestigious agricultural fair the Prized Cup or First Place Ribbon was awarded. These faithful portraits of celebrated birds, set in elegant pastoral landscapes or tidy barnyards settings evoke both timeless sophistication and country elegance. Traditional poultry prints have been… Read More
