Boards rubbed, and scuffed along the edges; joitns scuffed, with mull exposed. Discreet markings (ownership signatures, bookplate) on front endpapers; some light foxing; but overall internally nice and clean. Sabin 102094. The frontispiece shows Waterton's "Nondescript Man," a hirsute creature composed of various features of man and beast. Wateron was an expert in taxidermy, and perhaps a bit eccentric -- rumored to have an entire human being preserved in his home, which nearly caused a local riot. This work provides an early description of tropical plants and animals from personal observation, species hitherto known to a small number of people in academics and museums.
