Laid in is a manuscript letter dated 1944 and addressed to Mr. [John Adams] Lowe, signed by Evalyn Katz, his then-fiancee. The letter thanks Lowe for his letter, explains that it might be "a few months" before Shapiro is able to write back. Bookplate of The John Adams Lowe Collection of American Poetry, 1936, Rochester Public Library. Hardcover, grey cloth boards with black and red lettering on front cover and spine, 8-1/2" tall, 63 pp. Karl Shapiro was the 5th Poet Laureate, and this was his Pulitzer Prize-winning volume of poetry. Book is near fine with just light wear; dust jacket has toning to edges and spine panel, a 1/4" deep triangular chip to top edge of front panel, another chip to head of spine panel, original price of $2.00 intact.

Corners wearing through, spine ends turn in. This is an example of Crowell's novelty binding known as The Oak Leaf Edition and issued 1898-1900. The binding was designed by the Decorative Designers firm.

Full contemporary calf, stamped with rules & fleur-de-lis at corners, 11" x 7-1/4", (26). 680, (2) pp. Wear to edges, hinges a little tender, minor chip at foot of spine, dampstain to bottom margin of last leaves. First published in English as "Of the Consecration of the Bishops in the Church of England", it was a well-received Protestant apologetic work. Mason prepared an enlarged version in Latin which included responses to his critics. He finished the manuscript in 1620, but died before it could be published; which eventually happened in 1625 through the efforts of Nathaniel Brent of Merton College.

A beautiful fine binding of a fun edition of one of the most important genre-setting novels of the 20th century.
