Description:
Boston, Massachusetts: Ticknor and Company; Boston, 1889. First Edition. Original Wraps. Very Good. Signed and inscribed by the author with a six-line light verse, "Chas. Henry Webb, Nantucket, Feb. 1st, 1897." 16mo, 6 1/2" tall, 132 pages, binding sewn, red cover titles, paper vellum over stiff wraps. A very good, clean, soft cover original of this scarce title, likely unread (signatures uncut) but cover loosened from internal binding, some foxing to the endpapers, internal binding tight, paper light to moderately yellowed. Webb (1834 - 1905) went to sea for three years as a young man, was largely responsible for getting Mark Twain's first story published, and was a lifelong friend. As a journalist, he covered the Civil War, wrote for The New York Times and San Francisco Bulletin, and also edited the Californian. His verse was regularly published in Harper's Monthly.

Description:
Paris, France: Delloye, Tresse, 1840. First Edition, early printing. Hardcover. Good. Text in French. Octavo, 8" tall, 247 pages, quarter-leather with paper over boards. Possible first printing, with both Balzac's dedication and the credit "Represente sur le Theatre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, le 14 Mars, 1840," dated the same month and year. A list of characters and the actors who portrayed them is printed on the back of the half-title page. A good copy overall BUT the cover is quite worn with the black leather back strip torn off (five inches of the backstrip laid in) and boards worn through at all extremities, front hinge cracked, first signature loosened, binding solid, text paper lightly yellowed but with foxing scattered throughout. This would be a good copy for binding restoration despite the foxing and is priced accordingly. (note: overseas postage may be prohibitively expensive)
