The decorative dark maroon covers are in good condition, with moderate bumping and fraying to the top and bottom of spine; corners rubbed. The front hinge is loose with some fraying, but intact. The title is stamped in gold on cover and spine, although faded on the spine but still readable. The back cover is moderately scuffed. The binding is solid. The interior of this book is in good plus condition. There is no writing detected in the book; the pages are generally clean, there are small spots on a few pages and a few are foxed (in particular the end papers, frontis and tissue guard covering the frontis). There is an old Bible class library sticker on the inside of the front cover. The book contains 4 illustrations, including the frontis and one of Edgar Allan Poe. The book includes essays about several important figures including Poe, Aaron Burr, Benedict Arnold, Percy Shelley and Charles Dickens.
