Description:
Oxford and London: Printed for R. Clements, 1753. Very good in period polished calf, hinges reinforced, wear to edges, Rugby School and prior owner bookplates to front pastedown.. Hall boldly and incorrectly claimed, when the book was first issued in 1597, that he was the first English satirist (writing in the Latin tradition), "I first adventure, follow me who list; And be the second English satirist." At the time, the Archbishop of Canterbury directed that Virgidemiarum be burned for licentiousness, but later relented. Alexander Pope declared the Virgidemiarum to be the "best poetry and truest satire in the English language." (Dibdin, Bibliomania, pg. 506, 1811). 12mo. ix, [7], 13-108 pp. ESTC T140513.

Laid in is the invoice from Sotheby Parke-Bernet from 1976.. First edition in the original 24 parts as issued. First issue, with "actresses" for "ancestresses" on p. 207, No. 7, line 15 from the bottom, in part 12, chapters XLVII-XLVIII misnumbered XLVIII-XLIX, and including the explanatory slip in part 20. While generally well received at publication, time has not necessarily treated it kindly, with a modern commentator stating "[t]he Virginians is a bad book - dissatisfying in the reading, acknowledged as…
