Description:
Berkeley: University of California Press, 2013. First edition. Hardcover. As new/fine. Gauguin, La Farge. 329p, 122 ills. + 16 color plates. Brings together the "modernist primitivism of the French painter Paul Gauguin, the nostalgic exoticism of the American artist John La Farge, and the elite tourism of the American writer Henry Adams" and how they "wrestled with the elusiveness of paradise and portrayed colonial Tahiti in ways both mythic and modern." Based on much fresh archival research in Europe, America, and the South Pacific.

Description:
1900. Unbound. Good. Gelatin silver snapshot, printed in sepia on glossy paper. Ca. 4 x 2 1/2 inches. Algiers was (and is) a historically Black neighborhood of New Orleans, across the Mississippi from the city center. This photo shows part of its extensive railyards and a steel and wire bridge of some kind. Two workers are at the wagon on left (one is obscured by the horse), a man and woman(?) are sitting in a cart, while another man and two women look on. Some railroad workers are seen in the lefthand distance. All seem to be Black. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate.
