London: Chapman and Hall..., 1874. FIRST ONE-VOLUME EDITION. 8vo, 170 x 108 mms., pp. [iv], 329 [330 blank], contemporary half hard-grain red morocco, marbled boards, spine ornately gilt, marbled edges and end-papers. Inscribed "W. G. The novel was first published in three volumes, followed in a common practice for 19th century publishers, by a separate one-volume edition. In The Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction (2nd ed., 2009), John Sutherland writes, "A breezily attractive novel in WhyteMelville's sub-Trollopian style. The narrative opens with a January country-house party at Plumpton Priors. The host, (Uncle) John Dennison, is a hunting man. Among his guests are a cricketing parson, Algernon Lexley, Uncle John's niece, Annie, a young Etonian, Perigord, a bored man of the world,… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for T. Worrall..., [no date] [1734]. 8vo, 187 x 117 mms., pp. 8, 40 [41 - 48 adverts], engraved frontispiece (detaching at upper margin); disbound; corners creased. Baker (1698 - 1774) will be remembered by collectors and scholars as the author of two books on the microscope, The Microscope Made Easy (1742) and Employment for the Microscope (1753). Later editions of this work put the word "Philosophical" before "Poem." The work was reprinted several times in the 18th century and in 1808, with notes by A. Crocker, with the reviewer in The Annual Review and History of Literature for 1809 commenting that "The versification of Mr. Baker is of the good old school, that of Dryden and Prior. Though somewhat negligent, it has in parts a force and freedom which followers of Pope have vainly endeavoured to unite with their more regular harmony." ODNB in its article on Baker refers an edition of 1727 as the first publication of the poem. ESTC does not list… Read More

Description:
London, Printed by W. G. For John Sims..., 1671. 8vo, pp. [xlvi], 432, 431 - 510 (pp. 430 - 431 repeated in pagination), engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of Monmouth, 18th century calf, recently rebacked, red morocco label, gilt arms of Signet library on each cover. Senault's De l'Usage des Passions was first published in 1641 and frequently reprinted in French. This translation was first published in 1649, and this would appear to be the same sheets with the mis-pagination uncorrected, but without the adverts found at the end of the 1641 impression. In 1772, John Almon published a work, The Philosophy of the Passions without mentioning Senault and in a translation not unlike the above. There are a number of corollaries in the work between Senault's theory of the passions and those found in Alexander Pope's poetry, particularly An Essay on Man. Wing S 2505.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. viii, 356, contemporary calf, cover borders ruled in bland, raised bands between gilt rules; lower front joint slightly cracked, top and base of spine very slightly chipped, corners slightly worn, but a very good copy. Romae: Ex Typographia Palladis Apud Nicolaum et Marcum Palearinos Superiorum Facultate. MDCCXLVIII [1748]. . 4t0, 228 x 178, pp. xx, 288, contemporary vellum, remains of cords at fore-edge, most of front free end-paper removed, front hinge cracked with interior of spine visible; with a late 20th century inscription on front paste-down end-paper: "1 Jan 77/A Rare book/ for rare friends/ Douglas Todd" Born in Clauzetto in Italy, Daniel or Daniello Concina (1687-1756) was an early and influential Dominican preacher, author, and theologian. This work, Usura Contractus Trini, was written on the history of usury and in it Concina vigorously disputed the work by Nicolaus Broedersen of Delft. Broedersen is believed to have been born around 1690, and to have died in either 1762 or 1772. The book Concina took as the target of his criticism was Broedersen's De Usuris Licitis et Illicitis from 1743, whose publication some regarded as outright scandalous. The first edition of… Read More
