Elegantly matted in an archival Ivory and gold French mat sized to 14 x 18 inches, suitable for framing. This large and showy print is from an unbound set of plates, with accompanying text, issued monthly for one of the most glorious 19th Century Belgian horticultural periodicals from the house of nurseryman Ambroise Verschaffelt: L'Illustration Horticole; Journal Special des Serres et Des Jardins. This work was edited by Charles Lemaire (1800-1871) a renowned Professor of Botany, as well as Classical Literature, horticulture writer and esteemed colleague of Louis Van Houtte, proprietor of one of Europe's most prominent greenhouses, Establishment Van Houtte. New York:: Forest, Fish and Game Commision,, c. 1902.. First printing. Fine condition. . A fine original chromolithograph printed on heavy coated stock. Quarto (9 x 12.5 Inches). Published as part of the unbound portfolio of prints. This is one of the finest of the early 20th century American chromolithographs: a color-printed lithograph in which a separate stone was used for the application of each color which meticulous registration to recreate the subtle tones of blended color . This fine chromolithograph was produced from the original watercolors by John Livzey Ridgway (1859-1947), a prominent American scientific illustrator and draftsman for the USGS Reports from 1884- to 1920. Archivally double matted in rag board, sized to 16x 14 inches, suitable for framing.
