Description:
[Brandreth Lake, New York], [`904]. Two sepia prints, each measuring about 4.75" x 3.75", mounted to cardstock with about 1" border. Prints in very good condition, with mild fading to edges (though this may be the quality of the exposure). One mount has a corner chip, else in excellent condition. The two images depict three figures in a fishing canoe, who are helpfully named in contemporary pencil on the verso of both images. The verso text reads: "Taken by Frederick Potter, May, 1904, at Brandreth Lake. Wm. H. Taft, in the stern of the boat, H. C. Hollister in the bow. Curt Hull, Guide." At the time, Taft was serving as Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of War. Howard C. Hollister was an Ohio jurist, and when Taft became President, he appointed Hollister to a newly created position as District Court Judge for Southern Ohio. For those who celebrate the whimsy of presidential politics and history, it's worth noting that the images do indeed depict the 27th president's ability to displace water.

Description:
[no place given - London? New York?]: [no publisher given], 1885. Accordion-style. Very good. Three transfer picture albums, bound accordion-style, each measuring about 4.5" x 3" (11.5cm x 7cm). Each volume contains a folded sheet of eight themed panels, which each contain six individual "Transfer pictures." When the pictures are unfolded and laid flat, they measure about 37" long altogether. These transfer pictures were designed for children to cut out and apply to paper (or general "articles", as noted on the rear wrap of each album, likely to the consternation of many parents). Of course, they could also be used as temporary tattoos, likely one of the earlier examples of the modern concept in Europe. The content is quite diverse, including animals, carriage scenes, soldiers, etc. Fragile as they are, they are quite well-preserved. The yapped edges are generally chopped and torn, but they are mostly complete, and internally only one or two small pictures have… Read More

Description:
Boston: E. Lincoln, 1807. First Edition. Softcover. Good. Octavo, 16pp. A good or better copy, bound into later plain brown paper wrappers. Sizable chip to the first three leaves at the gutter, not affecting any printed text except for part of the first letter at the title page. Some scattered foxing, and age-toning to the first and last leaves, probably from the acidic paper wrappers. This also affects a gift inscription on the title page from one "J. Porter." A very uncommon little pamphlet, which attempts to lay out a plan or regime for dealing with patents and the rights of ownership for innovating inventors. These concerns were certainly significant during the era of the cotton gin, the very beginnings of canal-building, and the steadily growing presence of small factories and mechanized labor in the young United States. Scarce in commerce. Checklist of American Imprints 13188 and 13480; Sabin 69502;.

Description:
Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co, 1883. Softcover. Very good. Large octavo, 16pp., plus folding illustration at rear. A very good copy in the original printed wrappers, with some splitting at the spine, and a few nicks, but overall sound. The folding plate is in excellent condition. It shows a detailed image of the "Multiple Switch Board for Indianapolis." In 1881, just two years before this pamphlet was produced, Alexander Graham Bell purchased the Western Electric Company, which scholars have described as a crucial step in the standardization of telephone technology and equipment. Just a few years earlier, telephone conversations could only be had between rented pairs of phones, attached by a line that had no way to connect to other telephones. The switchboard allowed for operators to manually move connections between lines so that anyone with a telephone could call anyone else with a telephone-at least locally-and the technology rapidly improved from then on. Quite scarce, with none in the auction… Read More

Description:
New York: J. N. Stearns, 1870. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. Bound by the publisher in plain brown cloth with gilt spine decoration. Spine ends worn, but internally clean, bright, and crisp, with the original yellow endpapers preserved. Overall, a solidly very good copy. Early 20th century bookstore stamp on the front free endpaper. SIGNED by the publisher (likely also the compilor), J. N. Stearns, on the front paste-down, and also bearing the pencilled signature of one James A. Briggs, a notable Clevelander and member of the Temperance Society. 48 tracts in all. There is no Contents page, but some titles include "Is Alcohol Food?" "Who is Safe?" "Drunkenness and Christian Love," and many others. While not dated, there are several references to events in 1868 (and some earlier), so we presume it dates to about 1870, and not much later, considering the materials used. Though known to libraries, this volume is scarce in commerce, and likely moreso in this… Read More

Description:
Houston: (W. H. Coyle & Co., Printers), 1913. Stringbound. Very good. Tall thin quarto, 192pp., illustrated, plus Index. Very good in the publisher's blue cloth covers, side-sewn with thick woven string. Some interior pages partly detached, but complete. A wonderful book, with photographic portraits and biographies of influential, thus news-worthy men in Houston at the beginning of the 20th century. Lawyers, oil men, bankers, capitalists, and other business leaders are profiled with personal and professional details. In 1913, Houston had just under 100,000 residents; less than 5% of its present size, just within the city limits. Though ostensibly the sort of book that might have been revised and published every few years, OCLC records just this 1913 edition. It is held by just over a dozen libraries, nearly all in Texas. Untraced at auction. A wonderful piece of early 20th century Texiana.

Description:
New York: Towse Publishing Co, 1925. Very good +. Undated, though based on aesthetics, likely from about the 1920s. Folding accordion cloth case with applied textured paper labels, housed in a slipcase. Case and sample cards in near fine condition; slipcase stained and dunked, but sound. A wonderfully thoughtful and image-driven guide for collectors of antique fabrics, textiles, carpets, and tapestries, which aims to help the reader pair these with various wood furniture elements, and help date them based on design aesthetics, materials, etc. The folders are separated by wood type, which corresponds more or less to the various periods of English history in which the styles were en vogue. With just two library holdings (per OCLC; SF State and OK State), with no collation, and none in the auction record, we are unsure whether this is complete, though it appears to be so. Must be seen and handled to be appreciated; a great piece of decorative arts history.

Description:
[no place, but England]: [not published], 1955. Hardcover. Very good. Tall quarto (228mm x 317mm), unpaginated [30pp.], illustrated. Black leather album with 15 leaves, with all rectos and versos used. 9 numbered pages, with 52 mounted cloth samples on 16 pages. A curious and well-illustrated bound typescript--really a handmade book--possibly a student project, which consists of a survey of the state of textile design in postwar Britain. Though certainly a study of the field, it's also a kind of manifesto, as the author makes their opinions known. For example, "Simplicity as well as suitability is also the basis of good design. Designs which are clutteed and over-worked are never good. It is clearly seen in the examples opposite that simple spots and stripe designs are the most satisfying." Though the captions for the various textile samples are short and generally do not identify the artist, the text clearly identifies the work of Lucienne Day and David Whitehead, whose samples are havily… Read More

[Switzerland], 1914. Hardcover. Fine. 16mo, unpaginated. Thin red boards, stamped in gilt, with numerous exposition prizes emblazoned on the front board. Nine thick cardstock leaves with glazed deep bluish-black paper lining, and 108 silk swatches loosely tipped onto both rectos and versos. Complete, with no missing swatches, and all in fine, unblemished condition. Loosely laid-in tissue guards still present. An extremely fine catalog, which offers 108 slightly different examples of very similar woven silk fabrics, some of which are more porous than cheesecloth, others of which are as fine as elegant bedsheets. Presumably published in the immediate wake of the 1914 Exposition Nationale Suisse in Bern, where the firm boasts of its "Medaille d'Or" on the interior of the rear board. Not separately listed in OCLC; a rare and very well-preserved trade catalogue of the highest quality merchandise.

[Boston and elsewhere], 1910. Hardcover. Very good +. Quarto. About 40 double-sided scrapbook leaves, nearly all used. Binding worn, with a brown cloth tape reinforcement at the spine. Internally intact and rather clean. Overall contents in very good or better condition. Scrapbook of Henry Clay Barnabee, one of the 19th century's great operatic comedians. The contents are mostly personal visiting cards with notes from the subjects, along with similar ephemera (telegrams, autograph letters, and the like). Just about every page is packed to the edge with material. Signed large cabinet photograph of Barnabee laid in. Barnabee was well-known in his time, particularly for playing the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1891 London production of Robin Hood (this role is mentioned in at least one place by Barnabee in his own hand within the scrapbook). A rich personal archive of Barnabee's, which no doubt will reveal to any scholar of his work the nature of his relationships to some other… Read More

[Cleveland]: [Colonial Theatre], 1912. Staplebound. Very good. Octavo, [16]pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's printed stapled wraps. Playbill for a Cleveland production of Little Miss Brown, a play by Philip Bartholomae. Most interesting to us is the prevalence of local advertisements. In the early years of automobile manufacturing, Cleveland rivaled Detroit. There are no fewer than three advertisements for Cleveland-built electric cars, including the Hupp-Yates, the Baker, and the Rauch and Lang. These last two firms merged in 1914, dating this playbill to slightly earlier. We don't locate any copies of this or any Colonial Theatre Magazine in OCLC. Scarce.

[various], 1920. Very good. Collection of over 1,200 cigar labels, mostly tipped-in to album leaves. 782 of the labels are pencil-numbered, while another 39 leaves of ten labels per leaf appear in another album, indicating well over 1,200 total examples in total, including several more loose album leaves and three sheets of unattached labels. There are certainly a number of repeated examples, and condition naturally varies, with a few dozen in poor to fair condition, many quite well-preserved, and still others in fine condition. The album leaves are mostly made from cheap, brittle, oxidized paper. In any event, an instant monumental collection of cigar labels for the hungry collector.

Description:
Cleveland, Ohio, 1953. Loose album leaves. Fine. Four loose album leaves, each measuring about 13.5" x 9.5", with 42 photographs loosely inserted into mounts. The photographs measure 3.5" x 3.5". Minor wear to the extremities of the album leaves, but the photographs are well-preserved, in fine condition. The photographs depict the immediate aftermath of a tornado that struck Cleveland's west side on the evening of June 8, 1953. Eight people died, scores more were injured, and the damage to property was immense, especially in the West Park neighborhood, south of Lakewood. Images depict uprooted trees, smashed cars, and homes with damage that varies from broken windows to total destruction. The tornado was well-covered as a news event at the time, but has been somewhat lost to history. For example, the Cleveland Memory project, tasked with maintaining an ever-growing archive of photographs and ephemera relating to Cleveland history, has a lone photograph in their holdings which… Read More
