Description:
copper engraving, verso text headlined "Tabula XI Asiae", with extensive geographical descriptions, VERY RARE. This example of the important map is from the early 1525 edition published in Strassburg. Laurent Fries' version of Ptolemy's eleventh map of Asia, covering the "southeastern corner" of the known world. The map shows "India beyond the Ganges" and covers the eastern part of the Indian Ocean, prominently showing the Malaysian Peninsula or the Golden Chersonese as the Greeks called it. Fries' map is a reduced copy of Waldseemüller's eleventh Ptolemy map of Asia, with the Malaysian peninsula, the islands of Maniolae (by some identified with Manila), and the legendary huge sea port of Cattigara, possibly corresponding to Canton. It is these furthest places in the Far East that the Greek merchants visited for trading. The woodcut decorations on verso are attributed to Albrecht Dürer, who also made the famous woodcut print of the armillary sphere in this atlas. Reference: not in Quirino.…

wood engraving, verso text 'NOVATA'. Map from "Cosmographia Universalis" (Latin ed.); (1st ed. 1544); Sebastian Münster [Munster] (1489-1552) probably was the most influential person in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe. First map in a then German speaking country to identify a Philippine island: Puloan [Palawan]. His Cosmographia contained not only the latest maps & views, but also included an encyclopaedic amount of detail about the known - and unknown - world. It was undoubtedly one of the most widely read books of its time, going through nearly 40 editions in 6 languages. An eminent German mathematician & linguist, Münster became Professor of Hebrew at Heidelberg & later at Basel, where he settled in 1529. He was the first to provide a separate map of each of the 4 known Continents & the first separately printed map of England. He had 2 major works, the Geographia & the Cosmographia. He died of the plague in 1552. A classic and important 16th century outline of the Asian…

Description:
copper engraving. One of the EXTREMELY RARE GLOBE GORES depicting different parts of the world. Map shows Western Australian Coast, part of New Guinea, and the South Coast of Tasmania, track of Le Maire voyage with explanatory description, then a reference to Magellan 1520, and a large scale write up on "Delli due Tropico" with a legend of findings in degrees by various astronomers. This exceptional series of globe gores was originally engraved for a 110 cm. diameter terrestrial globe in 1688 - as here. They were subsequently reissued in individual sheet format in Coronelli's "Libro dei globi" and in his World Atlas Isolario in the 1690s. "Coronelli seems to have sought to omit nothing that might be of interest to geographers, navigators and explorers. There are an unusual number of legends, all explanatory and informative, but which never crowd the space available. Many of the vignettes of ships and fishing scenes throughout the world are worthy of separate reproduction. Coronelli makes comments on…
