Description:
First US trade edition (as opposed to the stated limited edition) of the color plate version of The Clarke-illustrated Tales of Mystery and Imagination. A reprint of this edition was published through the 1930s. Text block is top-stained, in black of course. Large, weighty, imposingly black volume with gilt text and art on the spine and a paste-down on the front cover. Top-stained in black with the other edges deckled. Features 32 full page plates, 8 in full color and tipped-in. Tight, solid, square binding with some wear at top spine and some fading on the still-bright spine gilt. The front paste down is clean and as issued. Inside, the book is sharp and nice with a former owner's name (Priscilla Sanders) in genuinely spooky old cursive. Priscilla put penciled check marks in the Table of Contents showing that she liked, or at least read, almost all the poems in the book. These are instantly erasable, but left intact because I feel it's none of my business. All plates are present and as-issued with… Read More

Description:
Sixteen tipped-in color plates by Dulac, as opposed to 40 in the 1908 First Edition, although the front cover here is nicer. The earliest copies in this format, circa 1910, had gilt titles instead of the green and sometimes blue of this later printing.

All 16 tipped-in plates and their decorative pages are present and pristine. Solid binding, straight pages, front board illustration in nice shape except for bumped corners including old tape repair on the bottom right. The real issue here is the spine. It's foxed with spots worn in the cloth and some separation at the bottom. The back cover and rear endpapers have some staining that looks like a drip of actual wood stain.

Description:
Goodall's classic book, In the Shadow of Man, told the story of her first ten years of her time among the chimps at Gombe. Through A Window covers the next twenty years including many of the most famous and interesting and sordid doings of Gombe's politicaly motivated, Machiavellian chimp community. There are also chimp heroes and heroines and many lessons to be learned for those able to see themselves in the mirror that Through A Window also provides.

Description:
Solid, tight and square hard cover in chestnut brown buckram with red-gold gilding on the spine. No significant markings in or out except for a few lines underlined on page 263, seemingly by someone into Karl Jung in the 1970s -- a time when Jung's star was at an apex and popular paperback editions of his books filled the shelves, streets and open spaces of the whole entire world.

Tucked into the very back of this copy is one of those little Brentano's stickers, attesting to a story arc that began with that famous New York bookseller. Some people collect those stickers; here's one. The edges and corners of the front boards and spine are mildly bumped. The front board had a small light spot. The recto ffep and its verso counterpart at the back of the book have that blush of foxing you see a lot on books from the late 19th century, and sometimes on ones from the early 20th C. prior to WWI. This book, like many from Kegan Paul of its period, has a distinctly Victorian vibe.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1957. First/First. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Another of those mixed state first editions, with 'First Printing' on the copyright page and the uncorrected error on p. 327, bound in burgundy-brown cloth with black text and green accent lines, and with a priced but undated DJ ($3.95, ads on rear flap). Top edge dyed Gatorade green. Considerations are as follows, in ascending order: General effects of age and light use incl. subtle toning to the jacket, heavier but still decent on the spine. Light-to-moderate edge wear including 1/8" and smaller chips at spine corners. Asmall tea-like stain, actually probably linseed oil or another such wood/furniture protector, on rear lower right corner, 1 1/8" X 3/4"; and another (or really, probably the same one), 3/8" X 1/4" at bottom left corner of front jacket flap. A short, whimsical animation of this event is furnished on the lower right page corners, which if flipped show this transparent,… Read More
