A history of relevant events introduces each of more than fifty poems. "The smoke of many campfires of many campfires mingle to make this book. Campfires built in the deep, red canyons of Utah, by the big, roaring rapids of the mighty Colorado River and high on the rising, blue mountains of Southern Arizona." Ford 212.

Nice edition of this classic California novel that helped to spread the fame of the state, and no doubt helped to fuel migration to the area in the late 1800s and the first few decades of the 20th century. This work also helped to publicize the injustices and ill-treatment of the indigenous peoples of California, which in turn led to reforms in the administration of Native American affairs. Earth First! was an environmental group founded by Dave Foreman, Ron Kezar, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, and Bart Koehler in 1980 as an alternative to more mainstream groups such as the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society. EF! describes itself as "pure, hard-line, radical," and advocates supplementing lobbying practices with more direct tactics such as "demonstrations" and "confrontations." In addition to supporting traditional conservation, EF! calls for the re-creation of wilderness through the construction of a national system of ecological preserves in which dams, roads, and other traces of human activity will be removed. "No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth." Rare.
