Description:
1681 Mentis et Cordis Dominican Vincent Contenson Church Fathers Philosophy 9v

Vincent Contenson was a 17th-century French Dominican friar known for his sermons and philosophical writings. His fame came solely from his 'Theologia Mentis et Cordis', a work not published until after his death. Contenson was adamant that theology should steer away from scholasticism and focus more heavily on the emotional aspects and it contains numerous references to the theologies of the Church Fathers throughout. 'Mentis et Cordis' was Contenson's magnum opus, not only in popularity, but it was a large, nine-volume set in each of the 17th-century editions.

Description:
1669 Sanchez On Marriage Jesuit LAW Sexuality Perversion Forbidden Books! FOLIOS

A rare and controversial Catholic work on marriage. Due to the material dealing with sexuality and sexual perversion, this book was put on the Prohibited Book Index. Originally published in 1602, this book went through several editions and languages until the mid-18th-century. Thomas Sanchez, a 16th-century Jesuit, wrote many influential treatises on morality, though 'Disputationum de Matrimonii' is by far his most important.

This book, 'On Marriage' was written with the attempts to surpass previous treatises on marriage and civil law that existed, but the oddities he writes about make it rather polarizing to readers. Sanchez tells of the most intimate secrets of wedlock – lessons on how to use the bride-bed without being in the bed! Sanchez also elaborates on the validity of an engagement as it pertains to the commitment to marriage and whether it pertains to consummation. Ultimately, Sanchez wanted to prove that… Read More

1573 Ragione d'Alcune Cose Castelvetro on Annibal Caro Poetry Italian Language

Lodovico Castelvetro was a 16th-century Italian scholar who was notable for his commentary, notes, and criticisms of other authors. His commentary on Aristotle was his most famous work; however, he was highly critical of fellow Italian writer Annibal Caro. In his work 'Regione d'Alcune Cose', Castelvetro discussed the language that Caro used in his poems, criticisms that sparred debates between the two scholars.

Description:
1883 Ragnarok 1ed Comet Cataclysm Ignatius Donnelly Atlantis Apocalypse Geology

In his book, "Ragnarok: The Age of Fire and Gravel" Ignatius Loyola Donnelly posits that a massive comet impacted Earth around 12,000 years ago. This cataclysmic event led to widespread disasters, such as fires, floods, and extended winters, eradicating an advanced civilization. Survivors were forced into caves, regressing culturally, and losing knowledge of sophisticated subjects. Donnelly uses geological observations, like deep cracks around the Great Lakes and altered surface rocks in New York, to bolster his theory. Additionally, he references various cultural legends that hint at such a disaster, suggesting a shared memory of the event across civilizations. The book is a continuation of Donnelly's exploration of ancient catastrophes, following his previous work on Atlantis. Donnelly was known for delving into pseudoscientific and pseudohistorical theories, drawing connections between disparate cultures and advocating… Read More

1764 Electricity Letters by Nollet Ben Franklin Attacks Science Experiments 2v

Jean-Antoine Nollet was an 18th-century French physicist who made incredible contributions to world of physical science. Perhaps his best work came with from his experiments with electricity and his displays of static electricity. In his myriad of letters on electricity, Nollet describes his process and studies with electricity, but his letters on electricity are certainly most famous for attacking Benjamin Franklin's electricity research. In fact, it is thought that these letters were responsible for separating electricity scientists into 'Franklinists' and 'anti-Franklinists' (Priestly)
This 1764 two-volume edition of Nollet's "Electricity Letters" contains all of his criticism of Franklin, published in Paris by Guerin and Delatour.
