Chicago: Church and Goodman, 1865. Foxed frontise, interior plates and title page. Slight wrinkling to top of pages and title page. It was near water sometime, but it did not damage the boards nor hinder the text./None.. Not a common book on subjects that did not receive much notoriety. Anything Missouri and Kansas related to the Civil War is hard to find. Nevins I-38: "A personal narrative, by an officer of a Kansas Colored unit; emphasizes the service of Kansas militiamen." Dornbusch II-1801. This indicates the 83rd Infantry, USCT.

Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins Co, 1914. First. Hard Bound. VG overall. There is a vertical crease down the spine. Hinges excellent. Lettering looks faded, but the few copies I have seen all look that way. The black lettering on the scarlet cloth leaves something to be desired./None. Author served in the 1st Maryland Infantry (CSA) from First Manassas to Appomatox. Very scarce account. ITC-98: "...at least the equal to Goldsborough's account. This among the the most valuable Confederate soldiers accounts...author twice captured..." Nevins I-107: "Possessed of both insight and interest...particularly worthwhile for Jackson's campaigns." Coulter 243. Dornbusch II-531. Howes H-706. Maryland, being a border {and slave} state, had men serving both sides. Confederate accounts are rare and expensive. This one of two or three really good accounts about Confederate service.

NY: Putnam, 1887. First. Hard Cover. VG./None. The author served the 11th NY Battery. He was just 16 when he enlisted in 1863. Mistakenly, he was first confined with misfit bounty jumpers and captured deserters. They drew little sympathy from the rest of the army as evidenced by the shooting of several before the motley crew was shipped out to the field. Wilkeson fought at The Wilderness and then at Petersburg. Nevins I-178: "...charming and refreshing...wit and sarcasm... Dornbusch I-NY-58. There is an interesting chapter titled, "How Men Die in Battle" that is full of personal observations. THIS COPY WAS OBVIOUSLY OWNED ONCE BY A UNION VETERAN WHO SHARED THE SAME EXPERIENCES AS THE AUTHOR. THERE ARE A FEW BRIEF PENCIL ANNOTATIONS AND A NOTE CLIPPED ONTO A PAGE IN THE TEXT. THIS MAN HAD A FASCINATION ABOUT GENERAL OFFICERS. PART OF THE NOTE DEALS WITH THE WOUNDING OF UNION GENERALS.THIS OWNER IS NOT IDENTIFIED. Overall the book a very interesting read.

Baltimore: Sun Book and Job Printing, 1922. First. Wrappers. Front wrap loose and heavily chipped. Good, but with TLC can be much improved./None. VERY SCARCE!!! So rare it doesn't make the standard Civil War bibliographies.

NY: Putnams, 1918. First. Hardbound. VG. Book is square and tight with the spine lettering faded but easily readable./None. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY LONN. Another scholarly narrative by a respected historian. She authored NOT ONE, BUT TWO In Tall Cotton books and others of significance. This is a period of much turbulence and violence surrounding voting. Not in Nevins or other bibliographies. This is the first copy of this title I have seen and may be the most difficult of her works to acquire.

Norwich, NY: J.F. Hubbard, 1866. First. Hard Cover. Darkened boards, but readable lettering. Overall Good +. Foxing throughout../None. After assisting General Banks in the Carolinas, the regiment headed to the Trans Mississippi, namely Louisiana. Active during the Port Hudson Campaign and the Red River Expedition of 1864. Fought at Sabine Crossroads and Pleasant Hill. Transferred to the East where they participated in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and the Battle of Cedar Creek. One of Fox's Fighting 300. Dornbusch I-NY-470. Nevins I-57: " ...a thorough study..." Has a unit roster.

n.p.: State of Wisconsin, 1914. First. Hardbound. Ex-library but VG overall. Hinges starting.Only library item is a pocket on the back board. No stamps./None.. A super piece for the Wisconsin collector. This book has numerous and varied chapters with short histories of all the State's units. Wealth of statistics and a chronological listing of all the engagements by State troops. Not a common book.

Perry, NY: Ladies' Cemetery Association, 1870. First. Hard Bound. Rear hinge repaired, rest VG-./None. A rather morbid publisher, but the book has numerous lists of those who died in prisons, on the battle field and those wounded who died at home. The book contains not only a roster for the 24th, but also lists those from Perry who served in other units. THIS HISTORY CONTAINS A BRIEF AND VERY RARE ACCOUNT OF AN ATTEMPT TO USE ROCKETS INSTEAD OF STANDARD ARTILLERY. TWO COMPANIES FORMED A BATTALION AND UNDERWENT TRAINING BY A BRITISH "ROCKET SCIENTIST." DIDN'T WORK OUT, HOWEVER, BUT NON-THE-LESS AN INTERESTING TALE. Dornbusch I-NY-61. Nevins I-130.

Washington City: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1931. Expanded Edition. Hard Bound. VG+/None. Scarce. Service data and nice, short biography of each officer. Good reference material. There are 220 pages of navy officers.

New Bedford, MA: Reynolds Printing, 1928. First. Hard Cover. VG. A few rough cut pages, but overall tight and square. Binding has some minor soiling./None.. Ryder served in the 33rd Mass Inf, Co. I. He was a 20 year old farmer when he enlisted in July, 1862. He was listed as wounded at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864. The 33rd first served with the Army of the Potomac through Chancellorsville and gettysburg. It then transferred West where it served under Sherman for the rest of the War. Ryder remained in service throughout the War and mustered out in June 1865. Not a common title. Dornbusch I-294.

[Washington City]: n.p., 1880. First. Hard Cover. VG./None.. Contains a compilation of many things: bios of 92 officers, articles on Davis' flight, Morgan's Raid, etc. Mostly biographical information about Union generals. Not in Nevins.

Cleveland, OH: Cleveland publishing, 1906. First. Hard Cover. VG+/Has a vertical tear at the spine, chipped at corners, front flap separated but present, see photo.. This is a rare one! This a three month unit that saw action in what is now West Virginia during the earliest stages of the War. Served under General George McClellan while he gained early fame. The Cleveland Artillery was a part of the First Ohio Volunteer Artillery Regiment. Detailed account of that theater of operations. IN ITS ORIGINAL WHITE DUST JACKET!! Dornbusch I-OH-6. Not in Nevins.

Roanoke, VA: n.p., 1917. Second. Wraps. Darkened wraps around edges, tight and square. See picture./No Jacket. Brown served in Company C, 12th VA Inf of Mahone's Brigade. Scarce book. Dornbusch II-1376. Coulter 55. Howes B-864. Wright B-1408. Nevins I-64.

Hillsboro, TX: Hillsboro Mirror Print, 1902. First. Hard Bound. Beautifully rebound in 3/4 leather by one of the best restorers. Ex-library with nearly all the stamps. Other than one stamp within the text, marks are confined to the first three pages.Text is near fine. Priced accordingly./None.. A very rare and expensive Hood's Texas Brigade related book. The author was a member of the famed Fifth Texas Infantry, arguably in one of the best brigades on either side. "Texans always turn them" and "Lee to the rear!" are two famous incidents with this brigade. In all the major fights and fought well. Chock full of personal anecdotes. Stevens was captured at Gettysburg and served the rest of the War as a POW. Howes 970, Dornbusch II Texas-105, not in Nevins. (For a copy in its original binding, see Item # 562).

Baltimore: Sun Printing, 1904. First. Hard Cover. XLib with librarian induced faults. Number on front board, periodic acquisition stamp although not hindering the text. The frontisepiece and title page are clean.Hinges good, tight and square./None.. A rare Confederate memoir. A Marylander serving in the First Maryland Infantry, CSA, then attached to the Second Virginia Cavalry and finally to the First Maryland Cavalry Battalion, CSA. He was present at all the major engagements from First Manassas on. His narrative is refreshing in that it covers only what Gill saw and did, it does not critique or try to explain general officer strategy. Howes 169. Little Rock: Tunnah & Pittard, 1903. First. HB. Spine excellent with bright gold lettering. Hinges perfect, tight and square. Overall VG+.. A scarce reminiscence by an Arkansas private, CSA. Unusual book, starts like a novel then gets into anecdotes. Author served in the 25th Arkansas Infantry. Very difficult to find military history of that state's units. Says Vol I on the title page but that's all that was published. Book published w/o frontispiece as stated in Dornbusch and Nevins.

Austin: Univ of Texas, 1919. First. Wraps. Spine frayed and chewed, but holding well. Wraps VG./No Jacket. [UNIT HISTORY-CONFEDERATE] The noted 8th Texas Cavalry. Dornbusch II-1055. Coulter 35. Nevins I-60. The 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment, was a regiment of Texas volunteers assembled by Colonel Benjamin Franklin Terry in August 1861. Though lesser known than the Texas Brigade (Hood's Brigade, ANV), the 8th Texas Cavalry distinguished itself at several battles during the American Civil War. In four years of service, Terry's Texas Rangers fought in about 275 engagements in seven states. The regiment earned a reputation that ranked it among the most effective mounted regiments in the Western Theater of the American Civil War.[Wikipedia].

Evansville, IN: Keller Printing and Publishing, 1898. First. Hard Cover. VG. Spine lettering faded. Slight discolorations on both boards. Book square and tight with perfect hinges.. Dyer served with the 1st Kentucky Cavalry (CSA) under Morgan and Wheeler at various times. Dyer seemed to "visit" most Federal prisons at one time or another, he was jailed at Camp Chase among others. He accompanied Davis on his flight after Lee's surrender. Coulter 141. Dornbusch II-376. Howes; but not Nevins.

Garden City: Doubleday, Page, 1911. First. Hard Cover. Minimal exlibrary with the few markings confined to the glue downs. Book was roughly cut the first few pages. Lettering bright, boards exceptionally clean for a light colored cloth binding./None. General Duke was John Hunt Morgan's bother-in-law. He assumed command of Morgan's Confederate cavalry following Morgan's death. His narrative is not only military oriented but addresses social life, slavery, etc. A very collectible Confederate account. ITC-48: "A standard since its publication.." Nevins I-83: "...Exceptionally fine memoir...often consulted and widely quoted." THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE MANY PUBLISHED WITHOUT A FRONTISE PORTRAIT OF DUKE.

madison: Democrat Printing , State Printer, 1911. First. Hard Bound. VG/VG+/None. SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMMISSION, D.G.JAMES. An important Wisconsin piece. Includes list of deaths, testimonies of former Andersonville inmates including Mr. James who signed the book. Not at all sympathetic to Southern arguments and is therefore a compilation of all the bad statistics. An excellent read.
