Description:
London, England: Frederick Warne and Co.Ltd, 1900. First British Edition . Hardcover. Good/Very Good. Caldecott, Randolph. Companion to the "First Collection,'' this book contains 9 additional nursery rhymes both written & illustrated by celebrated British artist Caldecott (1846-1946). Probable First Edition, first printing, c. 1900 (no date in book). This is a likely ex-lib copy as 1) DJ is taped to book, 2) rear endpaper is missing--perhaps where card pocket was, 3) remains of a sticker to lower spine; no other marks. Oblong hardcover has decorative cloth-covered boards, nicely protected by the DJ. There is a slight dampstain to bottom edge of front cover & ffep; does not affect interior, which is very clean. Binding strong & straight, pages slightly off-white & unmarked. Slight old-book odor. The unclipped DJ shows virtually NO edgewear, but downgraded due to light soiling. Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we… Read More

A FIRST EDITION, first printing from 1962, this oversized hardcover is one of a series of "Marvelous Tales" issued by Macmillan in the early 1960s, each with Commentary by a famous author, & beautifully illustrated in soft watercolor designs by different artists--here, Italian Ugo Fontana. The original acetate covering is torn & peeling in many places. Inside, the pages are creamy white, colors bright. Former owner's name & address inside both front & back covers, else unmarked. Description:
Selly Oak, Birmingham, England: self-published, 1970. First Edition First Printing . Wrappers. Very Good. A magazine published out of the home in southwest Birmingham, England, of Jane Grove (though her name appears nowhere on it), who served as co-editor along with Bruce Birchall. A printout of a mimeographed promotional letter from the editors shows Grove's name & her street address, which appears as the place of publication in the magazine, though her name is nowhere to be found in the published product. Birchall was (or would shortly become) the Artistic Director of the alternative West London (England) Theatre, a socialist company formed in 1971. In 1978, when that group lost funding, he moved to Sheffield and recreated the company as the Itinerant Theatre. He was also apparently quite active in promoting girls' participation in chess. He died in 2011. In the introduction, "Forwards!" that opens this issue, Birchall, clearly writing in the first person now as sole editor,… Read More
