London, Paris & New York:: Cassell, Petter & Galpin,, 1873.. First edition. Fine. A Fine original Chromolithograph. Drawn by J. W. Ludlow and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, Lithographer. During the Mid-Victorian period, the nature of a country gentleman's wealth was determined by the breadth of his flock, which at times referred to his prized poultry stock. This fine original chromolithograph is an actual portrait of a prizewinning cultivated breed. In the tradition of classic 19th century animal portraiture, the bird is here represented in minute detail accentuating the meritous elements of the particular breed. The plate not only names the bird, but credits its owner and documents at which prestigious agricultural fair the Prized Cup or First Place Ribbon was awarded. These faithful portraits of celebrated birds, set in elegant pastoral landscapes or tidy barnyards settings evoke both timeless sophistication and country elegance. Traditional poultry prints have been… Read More

British Isles:, c. 1810.. Fine condition. A charming and rare original early 19th watercolor painting of the Ripheus, or the Oriental Emperor Butterfly. Gouache on China paper, mounted onto Cornish & Bond * Extra London Board with pencil notation. (4.75 x 5.5 inches,120 x 139 mm). The painting has been tipped onto ecru board of the period, yet the colors remain vibrant and rich. Although the artist of this brilliant study remains unknown, his or her technique and refined skill at handling this challenging medium is evident. An exacting eye and subtle use of color were the hallmarks of a trained student. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the art of natural history painting was an essential and favored skill for all well-bred gentlewomen. Clearly painted by an impassioned and experienced "armchair naturalist", who sought inspitation from the pletheral of bound volumes documenting the natural world of the day. Here the inspiration for this lovely composition was… Read More
