Description:
Kansas City: Lowell Press, 1978. First edition. One of 150 numbered and specially bound copies, signed by the artist. Oblong quarto. xv, [1], 128, [2] pp. Illustrated throughout, many in color. Publisher's binding is quite unusual; the top half is marbled boards and the bottom half is red calf, gilt spine and cover lettering, red endpapers, slipcase with gilt facsimile signature. A fine copy. R. Brownell McGrew moved to California with his family when he was a child and enrolled at the Otis Art Institute, studying with Ralph Holmes, Although he preferred portrait painting, he won recognition for landscapes and was so proficient technically that he spent his last year at Otis teaching. He worked as a commercial artist for M.G.M. and Columbia studios and then discovered a love for desert painting. Portrait painting, especially Navajo and Hopi Indians from Arizona and New Mexico, are what he is probably best known for.

Description:
New Zealand: Tourist Department, 1906. Original real picture postcard of a Maori chief probably named Te Ritimana wearing huia feathers and with moko (facial tattooing). Photographed by the New Zealand Tourist Department. This card was posted to London and bears a New Zealand one penny stamp. Corners a bit rounded but a very good copy. 'Tattoo' is the English version of the Tahitian word tatu. Tattoo is the tradition of marking the skin with ink and needles, whereas moko is the practice of scarring and marking the skin to reflect the whakapapa (genealogy) of the Maori wearer.

The Model B was their first production airplane and it was powered by a 75 horsepower Rausenberger engine. He designed a total of 6… Read More
