Oxonii [Oxford]: E Typographeo Clarendoniano, 1806. 8vo, pp. [iv], 445, [1]. Later vellum boards, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Somewhat browned and foxed. Binding a little scratched and browned, front joint neatly reglued and the hinge relined. Bookseller’s label of Galloway & Porter to front pastedown, ownership inscription of C.D.M. Costa to front flyleaf. The third edition of Longinus as edited by Jonathan Toup (1713-1785), first published in 1778, which ‘made this outstanding essay of ancient literary criticism far more accessible than it had been hitherto’ and inspired Porson to take up the study of Greek (ODNB).

Slightly later diced Russia by J. Bohn, boards bordered with a gilt rule, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, second, third and fourth compartments gilt-lettered direct, marbled edges and endpapers. Occasional toning and spotting, a handful of leaves with a marginal stain from before binding. A little rubbing and scratches, spine ends just a touch worn and vol. 1 joints cracking. Glasguae [Glasgow]: In aedibus Academicis excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, 1746. Foolscap 8vo, pp. [xii], 186, [58]. Contemporary brown calf, boards bordered with a double gilt rule, spine divided by raised bands, compartments with central decorative crosses and circular cornerpieces all gilt, marbled endpapers, edges red. Lightly toned, some spotting. Extremities a touch rubbed, joint ends just slightly cracking, a few marks, label lost from spine. Early MS shelfmark label to front pastedown, modern bookplate to flyleaf. Reprinting the edition of Daniel Heinsius, originally published in 1603, including Greek scholia. This is Gaskell’s larger foolscap 8vo issue with the Pro Patria watermark. Gaskell 78; ESTC T138185.

Nineteenth-century half pebbled roan, marbled boards, spines divided by triple blind rules and lettered in gilt direct, edges speckled red. Some scattered spotting. Just a little rubbed. Armorial Bibliotheca Lindesiana bookplates to pastedowns. The only fiction work of engraver and antiquary Joseph Strutt (1749-1802) and most notably the first historical fiction penned by Sir Walter Scott, who as editor completed the manuscript left unfinished by Strutt upon the older man’s death, as well as adding 2 poems to the 4th volume. Near contemporary half tan roan, pale green paper boards, spines divided by gilt rules and lettered direct in gilt. Just a touch of spotting, dampmark to last gathering of vol. 1. Rebacked and recornered preserving sections of original backstrip to 2 vols., hinges relined, old leather and boards rubbed and soiled. Small black labels with Teddesley lettered in gilt affixed to front boards. Presumably from the library at Teddesley Hall, Staffordshire, seat of the Barons Hatherton, demolished in 1953.
