Printed on paper, c. 63 x 52 cms., at one time folded into four, now lined with tissue and repaired at folds and edges, some loss of paper at the edges, the loss of a few characters in the folds, but otherwise in remarkably good condition; on the reverse in blue pencil is the contemporary note - 'Taken out of a deserted Boer Farm'. This was taken by and came back to England with CAPTAIN H. E. M. STUDDY, of the Imperial Yeomanry, 85th.Company, 2nd. Coloured paper boards, book block stapled onto the back but staples now rusted and the block loose, occasional foxing, a bit of rubbing, the glazed paper of the boards coming a little loose at the lower edges, overall still a good copy. *COPAC gives Cambridge only. The front paste-down offers 'Practical Hints as to how to Use the Palette and Colours'. The Palette is here present, a book-shaped card with thumb-hole, glazed to one side for the paints, a few splodges of which are still seen. The Paint Box, a black enamel tinned container with its full complement of 12 blocks of paint, is contained within a cut out at the top of the book block, c.4 x 2.5 inches. Two of the six illustrations have been competently copied. None of the other outline pictures has been painted in.

Boxes 1, 2 and 3 in maroon paper-covered book boxes, nos.2 and 3 a little faded and dilapidated though complete, boxes 5-8 in faded green paper, without damage. All cards and images in very good condition. *The numbering of the cards is somewhat eccentric, with many A, B and C cards. Box 3 contains cards numbered up until no.40, box 5 begins at no.48A - thus box 4 would have contained those cards numbered between 40 and 48. Each box contains 25 cards, the numbering running from 1 [box 1] to 100A [box 8].
