Near contemporary, unique Gruel "Sombre" full black Niger marocco binding (a pastiche of a Medieval binding). Spine in plain black compartments with raised bands and "Gruel" signed in miniscule at the foot (very slightly rubbed). Boards with original black lacquered steel clasp in the form of a Botonee cross with a trefoil design on the ends and 16 small pearls. The Poetry Bookshop, London, 1924 31 printed pages. Collection of 15 poems. Loosely inserted a printed 56 line poem "In Lambing Time" on antique-woven paper, signed by author "Patrick R. Chalmers" [1872-1942] above a 4.5 cm lamb's profile in gold at the bottom right corner. The insert is folded down the middle and, showing two indistinct stab marks along the crease, was probably the inside of a Christmas card, retained for the otherwise unpublished poem and author's signature. 14.5 x 22cm. Publisher's orange and blue checquer-board hand-printed & hand-made paper covered boards. White printed paper label on upper cover with black lettering within scrolling border. The Illustrated London News, 1855 A large original antique print with contemporary hand colouring. Overall size of print is 52cm x 39cm (including the mount it is 65 x 48.5 cm). In very good condition with central fold as issued. As with all the prints taken from the Illustrated London News, there is printed text on the reverse of the image. This was mounted a few years ago and once it has been framed, will be a sensational and historic showpiece. In 1852, opposite the wing of the Louvre, Baron Haussmann enlarged the Place du Palais-Royal that is centered on the baroque Palais Royal, built for Cardinal Richelieu in 1624 and given to the royal family, with its garden surrounded by chic commercial arcades.. 1st Edition. This is an attractive copy, beautifully bound about 1920 by Eric Wilfred Dickens, bookbinder, (born 24/9/1888) of 46 Mordaunt St. Stockwell, London. The spine has four floral motifs tooled in gilt, and seven gilt rules. This copy was used as a sample of Mr Dickens bookbinding skill & was purchased by us directly from the bookbinders grandson in its original book cabinet (that may now be seen in our Camden Lock Books office). Sparroy was the tutor of the Persian Royal children an one of the only Englishman in the entire Persian court.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.
