Pringle, Physician-General to the British Army from 1744 to 1752, was the founder of modern military medicine. His Observations "laid down the true principles of military sanitation and the ventilation of hospital wards. Pringle was one of the pioneers of the antiseptic idea, showed that jail fever and hospital fever are one and the same, did much for the better ventilation of ships, barracks, jails and mines, correlated the different forms of dysentery and gave the name influenza to that dread disease. London, 1791. Herschel, William (1738-1822). On nebulous stars, properly so called. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 81, part 1 (1791): 71-88. With: Home, Everard (1756-1832). Observations on certain horny excrescences of the human body. In ibid.: 95-105. Whole volume, 4to. vi, [2], 127, [1], 26, iv, 129-438, [2, incl. errata]pp. 10 engraved plates. 275 x 215 mm. Calf gilt ca. 1791, spine rubbed, hinges cracked, corners worn. Very good, clean copy. Engraved bookplate of John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury (1721-1807). First Editions, journal issues. Herschel's paper records his observation in 1790 of the planetary nebula now known as NGC 1514, which caused him to reconsider his hypothesis that all nebulae were in fact star clusters disguised by distance. NGC 1514 "is so close to Earth that William was able to see the central star that in fact is always present in a planetary nebula. Accordingly, William classified the object as a nebulous star. Lower corner of title-leaf chipped, occasional foxing but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed on the title: "For the Library of the Sheffield General Infirmary Presented by the Author." First Edition. Radford, an obstetrician associated with St. Mary's Hospital in Manchester, wrote the present work to promote the use of cesarean section—at that time a highly risky operation with an extremely high mortality rate—in cases where the woman's pelvis was too narrow or deformed for vaginal delivery. Radford's arguments were based on moral as well as medical grounds: He abhorred the then-standard practice of craniotomy (puncturing or crushing the fetal head) to… Read More

In 1853 the Swedish engineers Georg and Edvard Scheutz constructed their first successful working Difference Engine, a calculating and printing machine based on Babbage's designs and research. Babbage applauded the Scheutzes' efforts and did his best to publicize their machine, as he did in this address to the Royal Society in which he gave a brief summary of the Scheutz machine's construction, noted that it had won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition, and chided the Royal Society for failing to honor the Scheutzes in similar fashion.
