Caudill's story of Cuba during the Castro takeover as a Christian worker under the appointment of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board--Caudill was arrested and given a 10 year sentence but returned to the United States in 1969. Uncommon signed.

VG+ cloth pictorial thin hardcover (rubbing, scuff to edge, shelfwear at extremities, toning), with gift inscription on ffep. A scarce copy of this handsomely-designed book.

Near Fine.Premiere issue of this short-lived black literary journal issued by students at the University of Rochester. Includes poetry, artwork, photography, an essay on the black ghetto, and two articles, “The Nat Turner Insurrection in Historical Perspective” by Elizabeth Freydberg (who would become professor of Africana Studies at Simmons College) and “Crisis of Black Student Identity” by Armstead L. Robinson, Assistant Professor of African and Afro-American Studies at State University College at Brockport. Only one holding per OCLC (Rochester) and no copies in commerce. Not in Danky.

WBSM is the New Bedford, MA, news talk radio station founded in 1949. This cookbook is c. 1970.

INSCRIBED by Meredith on ffep, “For . . . , with best wishes, on a happy occasion for Connecticut College. William Meredith. Hillsboro Center, NH. 29 July 1958.” Meredith was an assistant professor at the college at the time this, his third book, was published. Meredith won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award.

Directed by Herman James. Illustrated flyer (8.5” x 11”). Edgewear, small stain at top edge, with “T-Th 4pm 2/10/68” written in blue ink in top right corner. A one act play in two scenes developed and copyrighted in November 1966, a little over a year after the Watts Riots in August 1965. The flyer notes, “To be followed by open discussion,” which aligns with the aims of Operation Bootstrap’s community-minded outlook. The play and discussion occurred at one of Operation Bootstrap’s buildings at 4171 South Central Ave. Lou Smith founded Operation Bootstrap, a community project and training center, after the 1965 Watts Riot, with the goal of helping to “prepare ghetto youth for jobs” (see Jet, Dec. 21, 1967, “How Negroes Fight Poverty in Watts,” p. 16-22). "This book is about a very important part of the total human environment. It deals with that part of the world which we have made for ourselves--the places in which we live and learn and play. These places include our houses, schools, parks, streets, neighborhoods, and cities."
