San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1933. First Edition, 1/500. 100pp. Octavo [25 cm] 1/4 tan cloth over brown printed boards. Better than very good. Name in ink on the front free endsheet. Number 7 of the Rare Americana Series. Includes an introduction by Charles L. Camp and nine color illustrations by Arvilla Parker. In 1841, Cheyenne Dawson of Austin, Texas was a part of the famed Bidwell-Bartleson Party, along with his brother-in-law and some "neighbor boys." The trip was organized in Sherman, Texas in 1849, and aimed a Southern Route. After crossing the Colorado Desert and visiting Los Angeles, the prospectors reached the Mariposa diggings in November. Dawson worked the dry diggings and eventually got into freighting and tells how his fellow pioneer Charles Weber of Stockton tried to coax him to ranching. In the spring of 1851, he began his return trip to Texas. Kurutz 171b.

Stephen Nelson Leak (1858-1943) was a longtime resident and founder of Jackson Hole, who settled in the area in the mid-1880s. Leek is credited by many for the National Elk Refuge with his letter writing campaigns, his push for protective legislation, and most notably, by his photographs of these majestic (and enormous) creatures, with a camera given to him by George Eastman.

Grand Canyon, AZ: Kolb Brothers, 1913. Large silver gelatin [35.5 cm 28 cm] / [14" x 11"] with Kolb mark in the lower right corner. Strong contrasts. Portrait of a Native American man wearing a shell necklace in a blanket. The legendary Kolb Brothers, Emery & Ellsworth, opened their studio in 1904, perched on the rim of the Grand Canyon (it is the building that looms over the top of the Bright Angel Trail). The building is still standing, but is now operated as a museum and gallery. They took countless images of the Canyon and the Colorado River below. Ellsworth and Emery Kolb were brothers, born in Pennsylvania, interested in photography and the 'Wild West.' In the winter of 1911, they made the first motion picture of a river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, where the brothers were repeatedly tossed into the river by their bucking boats. At one memorable point, as Ellsworth struggled to stay afloat in the roiling Colorado, Emery captured the moment on film before rushing to his brother's… Read More

Description:
Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2011. First Edition. 616pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Brown boards with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Fine/Fine. The city council dealt with all sorts of problems, large and small. In 1841 it threatened to kill free-roaming dogs and pigs, but two years later it had a change of heart. Now it specified that "cows, calves, sheep, goats, and harmless and inoffensive dogs shall be suffered to run at large as free commoners" without fear of harm. The reason for this was that Joseph Smith had decided "God withdrew his spirit from the earth . . . because the people were so ready to take the life of animals." The only thing more dramatic than the city's response to everyday matters was its failings in local and national diplomacy. In 1843, when it had grown tired of negotiating with public officials from neighboring counties, the city council petitioned the US Congress to see if Nauvoo could break away from the State of Illinois and become a free,… Read More

Near fine/Near fine. Bookplate on the front pastedown of both volumes. For the two months the Nauvoo Temple was in operation (December 1845-February 1846), scribes carefully documented all activities and events taking place inside, including lectures on the endowment ceremony drama and sealing rituals. Prior to the Temple's completion the Anointed Quorum held its regular gatherings, both in the Red Brick Store and elsewhere (women were initially washed and anointed in Emma Smith's bedroom and then escorted to the store) prior to the opening of the Nauvoo Temple. Never before have these primary, authoritative sources been correlated by date for comparison and fuller understanding of the gradual development of the temple ceremonies. Hildburghausen, GER: Stich, Druck und Verlag der Geographischen Anstalt des Bibliographischen Instituts, 1850. Map [29 cm x 35.5 cm] / [11" x 14"] on a single sheet [35 cm x 43 cm] / [13.5" x 17"] Hand tinted borders to Mexican states. A few short closed tears at the head in the margin (does not effect map). Rare map, that locates the shortly lived 'State of Deseret' which Brigham Young proposed in the spring of 1849. This provisional state was never recognized by the United States government, but was still located by a handful of European map makers, who wanted to provide in their mind, the most accurate map and to put it in the hands of the public at large, but specifically those who wanted to take to the Mormon, Oregon & California trails and settle in the then largely uninhabited western U.S. The dream of the State of Deseret ended in the fall of 1850, with the establishment of the Territory of Utah. Salt Lake City is located at its present location and named 'Mormonfort. Not in Moffat. Not in Wheat.
