Description:
London: Richard Bentley, 1837 A fair copy of Vol II in the original publisher's boards with inscription at the fep dated August 11 1838. The writing is a bit difficult but it looks to be to John Beecroft (1790-1854) who became Acting Governor of Fernando Po in 1830. The inscription says 'John Beecroft a present from his friend McGregor Laird Esq'. The binding was designed to be temporary and has not worn well. Part of the spine with the title label is preserved inside the book. The boards are intact. The pastedown endpapers have what look like the remains of wax blobs stuck to them. Contents: frontispiece with loose guard; title; contents list pp iii-vii; text 1-351 - End of Mr Oldfield's Journal with one further plate; 353-411; half title to Appendix; text 415-420; vocabulary 421-447, End. Contents are very clean. Pages are untrimmed and there is some foxing, particularly at the page edges. The frontispiece is very spotty, but the second plate just has a couple of browned areas in the margin. Pages… Read More

Description:
London: Henry Colburn, Publisher, 1843 A very good copy of the 2nd edition (published a year after the first and considerably enlarged) in newer cloth bindings. With hand coloured frontispiece and 2 black and white plates to Vol I and black and white frontispiece and a map to Vol II. Commander Bingham entered the Navy in 1820 and led a party storming the fort of Tycocktow in January 1841 during a naval expedition to China. He was injured shortly after, but was involved in the capture of Canton, and for that was made Commander in July 1841. He wrote and published his first account in 1842, and then, after it was well received, produced this enlarged 2nd edition which has an expanded introduction which covers more of the 'Opium question' and other additions. This copy is in black cloth bindings with blind ruled lines to spine and gilt titles and volume numbers. Both volumes are sound and tight with light scuffing and wear to edges and corners and slight scuffing to board surfaces. New endpapers.… Read More

Description:
London : Printed for the Author and for F C and J Rivington, 1806 A fair set of the final 6 volumes of Edward Donovan's beautiful work, with 216 hand coloured plates. Donovan issued the first 10 volumes in parts between 1792 and 1801. He viewed the work as finished, issuing a new title, contents pages and advert. He decided to restart the work issuing Vol XI 5 years later and completing Vol XVI in 1813. This set is in largely contemporary full leather bindings with raised bands, gilt decorative compartments, title and volume labels to spine. The boards have a delicate scroll-type decoration around the edges. All the volumes have wear to corners and edges and have varying degrees of wear to spine joints and ends. Board surfaces have some scuffing. Marbled endpapers. All volumes are complete, with 36 plates per volume. The work was issued in parts over time, so the paper quality varies with some being brown-toned or spotty. Vol XI: front hinge rebacked and spine relaid. 1806; with title; advert pp… Read More

Description:
EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1835 A very good copy of the first edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 30 hand coloured plates of pigeons from drawings by Edward Lear. Lear provided the illustrations for Pigeons and Parrots in the Naturalist's Library, and his work is distinctive for its accuracy combined with an ability to make the subject seem alive. The Pigeons volume is also unusual in the Naturalist's Library series because the backgrounds to the birds are partly coloured. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Pliny; hand coloured vignette title page with ring pigeons; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Pliny by Andrew Crichton; and text with black and white illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates. Description:
London : Rivington and Co, 1799 A fair copy of Edward Donovan's work on British Shells, in contemporary half morocco bindings with 180 hand coloured plates. Donovan is justly famed for his accurately observed and delicate illustrations of wildlife - mainly birds, insects, fish and shells. He took advantage of the large numbers of specimens being brought back to museums and private collections from voyages and expeditions. British Shells was issued in parts between 1799 and 1803 and subscribers would have been able to bind their copies as they chose. Donovan's works had limited distribution because of their expense, and have become scarcer as many sets have been broken up for their plates. This set is half morocco, with gilt lines to the spine and gilt titles, volume numbers and dates, and has marbled boards. The page edges have been minimally trimmed.
