Description:
Wood-block printed. 23 folding leaves. Folio (364 x 270 mm.), orig. wrappers (wrappers somewhat soiled & marked), new stitching. [Andong: Privately Printed at] Tosan sŏwŏn [or Dosan seowon], [most likely 1578 or, perhaps, 1638]. First edition, privately printed at the Tosan Academy, the private Confucian academy established in 1574, following Yi's death; this is certainly one of the earliest books to be printed there, if not the first. Yi Hwang (1501-70), also known as Yi T'oegye, was the most influential Neo-Confucian thinker in Chosŏn Korea (his portrait was used on the 1000 won banknote from 1975 to 2007). The academy named in his honor is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plum blossoms were an old motif in Chinese and Korean literature. Yi had an "ardent love" for plum blossoms as they often began to bloom in the middle of winter. He found them the perfect subject to express the value of endurance and self-cultivation. Yi turned to writing poetry as an escape from the partisan politics… Read More

Engraved vignette on each title (three different vignettes), 37 folding engraved plates, & numerous printed folding tables. 13 vols. 8vo, cont. half-calf & paste-paper boards (light foxing & dampstaining here & there), final six spines decorated in gilt with red & green leather lettering pieces on spines. Dresden: Walther, 1785-99. A complete run of the oldest German periodical concerned with mining, mineralogy, geology, and metallurgy; it was one of the leading journals of its kind and the chief mouthpiece for the teachings of A.G. Werner. The articles contain descriptions of the latest developments in mining machinery, local geologies and mineralogies, accounts of geological expeditions, reviews of recently published books, and several rather interesting historical pieces. Lempe (1757-1801), was professor of mathematics and physics at the Mining Academy at Freiberg and wrote many books on mining and technology. Very good set. Minor wear to a few volumes. Four folding engraved plates. Four parts in one vol. [all published]. 8vo, cont. half-sheep & paste-paper boards (occasional minor dampstaining, first 40 leaves with two unimportant wormholes in lower outer margin), spine gilt, black leather lettering piece on spine. Leipzig: Roch, 1801. First edition, all published, of this important mineralogical and geological journal; this set comes from the library of the great geologist and mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817), professor at the famous Freiberg Bergakademie. According to D.S.B., VI, p. 456, this is the first "special periodical for geology and mineralogy...Despite the recognition it received, it ceased publication on the death of its publisher." Some of the contributors include Ernst Friedrich von Schlotheim, Reuss, Vauquelin, Klaproth, Wiedemann, and other notable scientists. This journal offers a remarkable view of the ferment which the fields of geology and mineralogy were undergoing during this period. Apart… Read More

Illus. throughout (many in color). 96 pp. Oblong 8vo, blue cloth with red lettering. The Hague: The Netherlands Postal and Telecommunications Services, 1986. A playful and scarce mail art catalogue, published by the Dutch postal service; we locate two copies outside of the Netherlands. It begins with a Foreword and essay by famed Dutch designer Paul Hefting, known as "Mr. Stamp." Ulises Carrión's "Mail Art and the Big Monster" is re-published at the end. The original project was initiated by artist Piet Franzen of Haarlem, from page 39: "At the end of 1982 and beginning of 1983 Franzen asked Mail Art artists all over the world to send him their reactions to the celebration of May Day 1983 and to let him know what they planned to do on that day. A number of the hundreds of replies he received to his question are illustrated here as a Mail Art project. The choice of illustrations was governed by the desire for great diversity." The responses of the following artists are reproduced herein: Eduardo… Read More

Many illus. on different color paper stocks. Ca. 150 pp. Thick & oblong 8vo, printed softcover, string-bound. Ein Hod, Israel: Janco-Dada Museum, 1985. Uncommon exhibition catalogue for the "first Israel mail art show." Nearly 600 corrrespondence artists contributed works, all of whom are listed at the end. Many of these pieces are reproduced herein. Text in parallel Hebrew and English. From the preface by director Judith Shen-Dart: "'The mailbox is the museum' - declare the MAIL-ART artists. All the same, this catalogue accompanies an exhibition of their works, all addressed to the Janco-Dada Museum, Ein-Hod. In spite of their desire to taunt bourgeois culture and the gallery museum route, Janco and his Dada friends' merits stand us in good stead. As director of an institution bearing his name and that of the Dada movement I am welcoming almost six hundred artists from all over the world, in whose works the spirit of DADA is still alive." Two vols. 8vo, orig. paste-paper wrappers (minor wear, some light foxing, minor dampstain to last 20 leaves of Vol. II), uncut, orig. printed labels on spine (chipped). London: W. Phillips, 1827. First edition in French (1st ed.: London, 1827). "This is Faraday's only monograph; it gives a splendid picture of his experimental genius, his ability to turn things to new uses, and also of the laboratory practice of the day...parts of it at least can still be read with profit by a chemist wishing to improve his basic laboratory techniques."-Knight, Natural Science Books in English, p. 141. The valuable notes have been added by the translator Raymond Balthasar Maiseau (1782-1843), who also converted English weights and measures into the metric system. Woodcut printer's vignette on title, two engraved head-pieces, one folding engraved plate with two images (sometimes divided making two plates), & numerous engravings in the text. 4 p.l., 198, [12] pp. 12mo, cont. red polished morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, gilt fleurons in each corner, spine nicely gilt, arms in gilt of Sébastian Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban on each cover (Olivier, pl. 343), a.e.g. Paris: the Widow of J.B. Coignard & the Son of Coignard, 1693. Second edition (1st ed.: 1689), revised, with considerable additions. This is one of the best contemporary explications of Vauban's "first system" of fortification and siegecraft. Vauban (1633-1707), the foremost military engineer of his age, was equally esteemed for his skill in both designing fortifications and breaking through them. Vauban approved of this work and we find on the final page of the preliminary leaves: "Ce petit Traité de Fortifications ne contient rien qui ne… Read More

One engraved plate depicting chemical apparatus. lxxxviii, 343 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Cuchet, 1784. First edition in French; this was an important work in the chemical classification of minerals. Bergman's Sciagraphia regni mineralis, first published in 1782 in Latin, contains his general reform of nomenclature. "Following Linnaeus, Bergman divided inorganic substances into classes, genera, and species; and, as Linnaeus had done for plants and animals, he defined each class and genus by one word and each species by two. There were four classes: salts (including acids and alkalies as well as neutral salts), earths, metals, and phlogistic materials."-D.S.B., II, p. 7. Mongez (1751-88), has added to his translation extensive notes regarding each substance, citing works of other chemists and mineralogists. Very good copy. Cole 110. Hoover 114. Neville, I, p. 124. [Japan]: 1707? A beautifully calligraphed manuscript, in three volumes, of the Sandaishu ["collection of three reigns"], the collection of the first three of 21 imperially commissioned waka poetry anthologies compiled from 905 to 1439. Description:
Many fine brush & black ink illus. in the text. 45 folding leaves. 8vo (245 x 170 mm.), orig. wrappers (wrappers somewhat soiled), old stitching. [Japan]: at end in trans.: "copied in 1807." We learn from the first leaf of the index at the beginning of this manuscript that this is a later copy of a unpublished manuscript by Hori (1725-62), a native of Kyoto, whose father was also a prominent physician. Hori began to lecture in 1758 but died early. In this work, Hori provides a guide to finding pressure points for acupuncture based on bone measurement. Using bone length measurement for the measurement of acupoints location is called the "bone length method." Hori was remarkable for his unique and influential expansion of this method by incorporating the "twelve zodiac method" in establishing pressure points on the body and determining whether the meridian is open at a certain moment. The text makes many references to the classics of Chinese and Japanese acupuncture. For each of the 14 meridians,… Read More

[Japan]: Preface dated 1656; this manuscript was written sometime afterwards, probably in the 17th century. Yamaga (1622-85), military strategist and Confucian philosopher, set forth the first systematic exposition of the missions and obligations of the samurai (warrior) class. These included martial spirit, weaponry skills, loyalty to one's lord, a sense of personal honor, devotion to duty, and a willingness to sacrifice one's own life. Description:
One brush & ink illus. in the text. 7.5 leaves of text. 8vo (240 x 168 mm.), orig. wrappers (the inside of the lower wrapper is used for text), stitched as issued. Probably Edo: letters dated 1853-54. After Perry presented his letters of demands during his first visit to Japan in 1853, copies were made and distributed by Masahiro Abe (1819-57), the chief senior councillor to the shogunate, to daimyo and senior bakufu officials throughout the country, seeking opinions regarding the proper response to the Americans. The first four pages of this most fascinating manuscript contain the response of Toshiyasu Maeda (1800-59), retired daimyo of the Toyama domain (signed "Matsudaira Ecchu no kami" and dated 13 August 1853). The next two pages have the answer of Naomasa (or Narimasa) Nabeshima (1815-71), daimyo of the Hizen Saga domain (signed "Matsudaira Hizen no kami," dated 14 August [1853]). The following two pages contain the response of Nariyasu Maeda (1811-84), daimyo of Kaga fiefdom (signed… Read More

Description:
Hand-drawn double-page map of the Bonin Islands. 61 folding leaves. Large 8vo (268 x 200 mm.), orig. wrappers, stitched, spine backed at an early date with matching paper. [Japan: ca. 1860]. An intriguing manuscript containing early Japanese translations of American reports drafted during Perry's mission to the Bonin Islands (Ogasawara-shima) in June 1853, one month before he sailed into Edo Bay for the first time. It is a fascinating record of America's colonial and commercial ambitions in the mid-19th century and Japan's response. The volume's upper wrapper bears the official seal (onikki kata) belonging to the Keeper of the Diary, the functionary responsible for recording important events on behalf of the bakufu. We are uncertain how the Japanese obtained these secret American documents and when this manuscript was compiled. Perhaps it was composed after Japan's 1860 Embassy to the United States, when representatives were sent to Washington to negotiate a treaty between the two nations. Upon the… Read More

Description:
61 folding leaves, written in a fine & legible hand, several diagrams in the text. 8vo (255 x 158 mm.), self-wrappers, stitched. Edo: copied in 1809 by "Masatoshi Tada." This fascinating document is a copy of a log book, prepared by the guards and government officials who oversaw the activities of the famous Inner Sakurada Gate, part of Edo Castle. Following the title leaf, we find a table of contents with the following sections: 1. number of guards and officials, their positions and roles; 2. rules and regulations of the gate; 3. hours of duty and changing of the guard; 4. the actual log; and 5. annual events and precessions which take place at this gate. As one studies this manuscript, one becomes aware of the inner workings of the shogun's castle in all its complexity on a nearly daily basis: many names are listed, detailed comings and goings of dignitaries and doctors, rules for the workers, security issues in case of fire or earthquakes, armaments at the ready, lists of gifts and supplies for… Read More
