[Andong: Privately Printed at] Tosan sŏwŏn [or Dosan seowon], [most likely 1578 or, perhaps, 1638]. First edition, privately printed at the Tosan Academy, the private Confucian academy established in 1574, following Yi's death; this is certainly one of the earliest books to be printed there, if not the first. Yi Hwang (1501-70), also known as Yi T'oegye, was the most influential Neo-Confucian thinker in Chosŏn Korea (his portrait was used on the 1000 won banknote from 1975 to 2007). The academy named in his honor is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plum blossoms were an old motif in Chinese and Korean literature. Yi had an "ardent love" for plum blossoms as they often began to bloom in the middle of winter. He found them the perfect subject to express the value of endurance and self-cultivation. First edition in French; this was an important work in the chemical classification of minerals. Bergman's Sciagraphia regni mineralis, first published in 1782 in Latin, contains his general reform of nomenclature. "Following Linnaeus, Bergman divided inorganic substances into classes, genera, and species; and, as Linnaeus had done for plants and animals, he defined each class and genus by one word and each species by two. There were four classes: salts (including acids and alkalies as well as neutral salts), earths, metals, and phlogistic materials."-D.S.B., II, p. 7. We learn from the first leaf of the index at the beginning of this manuscript that this is a later copy of a unpublished manuscript by Hori (1725-62), a native of Kyoto, whose father was also a prominent physician. Hori began to lecture in 1758 but died early. In this work, Hori provides a guide to finding pressure points for acupuncture based on bone measurement. Using bone length measurement for the measurement of acupoints location is called the "bone length method." Hori was remarkable for his unique and influential expansion of this method by incorporating the "twelve zodiac method" in establishing pressure points on the body and determining whether the meridian is open at a certain moment. An intriguing manuscript containing early Japanese translations of American reports drafted during Perry's mission to the Bonin Islands (Ogasawara-shima) in June 1853, one month before he sailed into Edo Bay for the first time. It is a fascinating record of America's colonial and commercial ambitions in the mid-19th century and Japan's response. The volume's upper wrapper bears the official seal (onikki kata) belonging to the Keeper of the Diary, the functionary responsible for recording important events on behalf of the bakufu. We are uncertain how the Japanese obtained these secret American documents and when this manuscript was compiled. This fascinating document is a copy of a log book, prepared by the guards and government officials who oversaw the activities of the famous Inner Sakurada Gate, part of Edo Castle. Following the title leaf, we find a table of contents with the following sections: 1. number of guards and officials, their positions and roles; 2. rules and regulations of the gate; 3. hours of duty and changing of the guard; 4. the actual log; and 5. annual events and precessions which take place at this gate.
